George Washington's birthday today. Happy Birthday, Mr President.
I offer one from the CrabAppleLane front yard this glorious Sunday afternoon. It's a gorgeous day for picture taking, bike riding, walking, whatever. I plan to do some and/or all of that. More productive undertakings will have to be postponed.

CrabAppleLane Pileated Woodpecker - February 22, 2009
Quote of the Day
We need leaders to help us through our crises, not provide us with crude evaluations of our character. And we don't need sermons from liberal virtuecrats, anymore than from conservative virtuecrats.
Maureen Dowd, New York Times
Blog of the day here.
Quote from said blog: "I've been aching to paint something just for me, from my head, for a while. It feels so good to do that! It's a bit of a dragonfly-butterfly-leaf creature, hence the name, Drabulea."

First thing I thought when I saw that picture (and before I read your description) was... that woodpecker is huge! I didn't know they got that big. Very cool!!
I love the woodpeckers but I've never seen one up close. They are magnificent! Great pix, even with the haze.
I have never seen anything like that. that is huge. And magnificent!
And I agree with Maureen Dowd. I'm going to find a way to work that into a conversation this week.
Thanks to all of you
I have several varieties of woodpecker here. The red-bellied woodpeckers are the most common and they're bigger than most of the songbirds around here but not nearly as big as their pileated cousin.
Now that's a gorgeous picture, but you are a fabulous bird photographer!
Thanks, Andrea. I just have fabulous birds that live around here or pass through.
