Rob's 1981 Monte Carlo
This is my first new car. It was a Midnight Blue 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I paid $7900 for it in 1980. When I first started looking at new cars, the 1980 Monte Carlos were all the rage. The dealership didn't have one that I wanted or could afford so I special ordered one. When it came in, it was a 1981 model, which looked quite a bit different than the 1980 model, and I didn't know, at first, if I liked it. It grew on me when I drove it home that Friday night for the first time and grew on me even more when my neighbor told me the next morning that it was "
absolutely gorgeous". This was taken on our vacation to Gatlinburg in 1982. That far left room was ours. Don't remember much about it except that it was fairly cheap and pretty much all we could afford.
That is one fine piece of machinery. Love the wheels, too.
Thanks, Marie. About those wheels: One of the reasons that I couldn't afford the ones the dealership had was because all of them had wire wheel covers. Not only were they expensive, I didn't want them. Guess what? This one came with wire wheel covers, too, even though I specifically asked for the rally wheels you see in this image. The dealership swapped them out for me. I wouldn't have taken delivery otherwise.
Nice wheels, though not my style.
When you mentioned Gatlinburg it reminded me of a long weekend family trip there circa 1974. Even at the age of 13 or so I could see it was a tourist trap. One of my best memories came out of that trip though, when dad took me fishing at some nearby river. Neither one of us knew what we were doing and we didn't catch squat. It was still a great day.
I liked Gatlinburg although it had its tacky components. In fact, the very nice man who ran the motel pictured above was a little embarrassed about it. Showed us quite a few things we could do to get away from the tacky. I was there for the mountains, though, not the town. I had a great time there and would love to get back. Will stay in Maryville next time, though.
I didn't mean for that to be as negative as it came out. Yeah, it had its tacky stuff, but the whole family had a good time there and the scenery was great. I would go back to the area again.
It didn't come out negative to me, Dave. I suspect we both enjoyed the mountains more than the town. Totally unfair to Gatlinburg. The mountains are spectacular. Would like to get back one day with our bikes and some hiking gear. Would like to stay out of the car as much as possible next time.
First new car...always a fun moment when you finally get a new car after so many years of used ones. Mine was a 2000 Passat, which just went over 100,000 miles and still is running great. How long did the Monte Carlo last, Rob?
We traded it in sometime in 1985, Mr B. It was still running then. I've gotten good service out of all of my new vehicles, ALL GMs. I don't do much more than change the oil at regular intervals. Major repairs have been few and far between. Changed the engine in my 1990 truck at 315,000. The 2004 model that replaced the 1990 has over 100K on it now and still runs like new.
