Never fully understood the fascination Hollywood had with James Dean but the fascination with Grace Kelly is a whole other kettle of fish. That one, I got ... but imagine a director, Gregory Ratoff, saying this:
What I love about this girl is that she's not pretty!
What??? I'll defer to The New Yorker's much more eloquent Anthony Lane:
Few movie directors have been certifiably blind, and on the strength of this oversight Ratoff tops the list with ease, but, to his credit--and to Kelly's relief--he was ready to rave about this creature for reasons other than her looks.
That about sums it up.
The Bears did what the Saints could not do for themselves Sunday. The Bears win last night over the Vikings in overtime at cold, cold Soldier Field clinched the top seed and homefield advantage for the Saints. Of course, that won't matter much if the Saints don't snap out of the funk they've descended into the last few weeks. If they can lose to Tampa Bay in the SuperDome as they did Sunday, they can surely lose to any of the NFC playoff teams there. Still wondering where the magic went. Hopefully, it's still nearby.

If I could cuss right now I would
Jared Allen, Minnesota Vikings
Blog of the day is here.
Quote from said blog: "Chillier times in Minnesota there could not be. Of course every December in the land of 10,000 lakes, the mercury drops to frigid depths, but this December the Minnesota Viking sideline is frostier than usual."

If I think about the James Dean movies, all three of them, I agree with you. The mystique is all because he came and went so fast. Like Richie Valens.
I find it a lot more interesting, honestly, to watch someone like Rip Torn or the late and still-lamented Richard Farnsworth (or Paul Newman or whoever you like). Of course, they enjoyed the gift that Dean never had--time and plenty of it to figure out what they were doing.
Exactly like Richie Valens, Dan. I liked Farnsworth a lot. Never once thought he was acting. Richard Jenkins is that actor for me now.
