We knew it was going to get cold last night. Down in the teens we were told. My outdoor thermometer tells us it went below that. Adding to the cold and misery here, our power went out at 7:15AM and wasn't restored until 2PM. Without power, we have no heat or water. Hasn't been a fun day to this point. Currently, we are waiting for the water tank to refill, the water heater to refill and heat up, and the house to warm up from the 54º it was when power finally came back on. How's your day going?
My take on today's playoff games:
Bengals-Jets in Cincinnati: The Bengals looked like a decent team earlier in the year but I just don't see them doing much business offensively against the Jets. I don't see the Jets doing much offensive business, either. This figures to be a pretty dull game in the icy cold of Cincinnati. I give a very slight edge to the Jets.
Cowboys-Eagles in Dallas: These two teams played last week but only one of them showed up. I don't expect that to be the case this week. I think Andy Reid can probably come up with a winning game plan if you give him three shots to do so. The Cowboys are playing well right now but the Eagles know them as good as anyone and I just don't think the Cowboys can sustain this level of play. The Eagles are a potential Saints opponent next week. The Saints will have to win one and the Cowboys will have to win two before we get a Saints-Cowboys rematch. I am not wishing or hoping for anything ... for fear it may come true. I like the Eagles in a close one.

Quote of the Day
I'm a completely different player and this is a completely different team. Those past games have absolutely no bearing on anything going forward.

Blog of the day is here.
Quote from said blog: "Everyone's broken their own right wings & we go 'round pretendin' impossible things"

Our power was constantly on & off this morning (on for 10, off for 5, on for 15, off for 2, on, off, on, off.) My husband called it in & they told him there was trouble with the Talisheek station & they already had 2300 calls logged about it! Fortunately regular power was restored shortly afterwards.
We were told it was due to substation trouble in Bush. We never did see a truck. They had to have a lot of calls. We got the "All circuits are busy at this time" message a few times. I called it in at about 7:15AM and we never talked to a human again until about 1:30PM. We were very concerned they weren't going to get it fixed before nightfall. It came on at a little after 2PM and has been with us since.
Bummer about the power issues. I'm glad they got that fixed before nightfall. I remember an ice storm when I was a kid and we were living in Atlanta and we went three days without power. We all slept around the fireplace.
-14 here this morning.
Meant to add that it looks like you'll have to watch tomorrow's NFC game to see who the Saints play.
Brrrrr! Not a good day for the power to go off. Hope you're all warm and toasty now, Rob.
It's been shocking weather in the UK, check this photo out... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk/8447023.stm
No fireplace here, though. Went with a wood pellet stove instead. More efficient but one glaring shortcoming. Can't use it without electricity. -14 and you guys just breeze right along, don't you? A hard freeze or sleet/snow just cripples this area. Power goes out, pipes freeze and burst, and roads become unusable.
Yeah, it looks like they can throw that Eagles tape and game plan away. The Vikes have their hands full next week ... but so do the Cowboys. The Vikes have a much more balanced offense and a better defense. They match up.
I had seen a different version of that photo, Fi, but the one you link to is far superior. Thanks. Quite amazing, isn't it?
Breeze is too strong a word, at least regarding me. Cope is probably accurate enough.
I'm curious about the stove. Obviously the fan doesn't work on that without power, but you can't fire it up and get just radiative heat? Will that damage it? I've never used a modern one like yours.
Without electricity, the auger doesn't feed the pellets, Dave. The blower also does more than blow the warm air into the room. It blows the smoke out the exhaust and sucks the fresh air in necessary for combustion. It's a very sophisticated system. Has a catalytic converter, too. Very efficient, very economical, and very green ... as long as you have a local or reasonably-priced pellet source.
So? A couple of stationary bikes with dynamos and a DC/AC converter should be able to handle that. Where are your priorities, human? ;)
Well, we had a couple of hamsters working their wheel but you remember what you did about that.
Oh, right. Sorry about that.
Never mind.
