CrabAppleLane Power Line - September 1, 2008 8:40AM

As I was preparing for Hurricane Gustav about a year and a half ago, I had lamented that I hadn't taken care of a pine branch that was extended out over our power line. The branch had survived Hurricane Katrina somehow but it had grown outward considerably since then. I said I would get to it if it survived Gustav. It did survive. I never got to it. My plan was to have a professional come out and do it. It's 12 to 15 feet up and it's right above the power line as you can see. I didn't get a price but I'm guessing it would have been a couple of hundred bucks. Well, money has gotten tighter since then and I had no choice but to live with it a while longer or try to do it, myself. It should be noted that getting up high on a ladder with a chainsaw near a power line was never going to get very high up off of the bottom of my to do list.

A new plan came to us by sheer luck. Some parish contractors were clearing tree branches from the utility poles not long ago and one of the men came up to our door and knocked. Patsy answered. They told her they could remove it for us if we wanted them to ... for free. Sold. They did it yesterday. Take that, you eager beaver efficient types.

Quote of the Day
I live my life from day to day
Cause I wouldn't have it any other way
Whether I'm twelve or whether I'm sixty-four
Spend my time like there ain't gonna be no more.
Montrose, Make It Last

Blog of the day is here.

Quote from said blog: "Of course, Mister's cuteness alone was all I needed to see to get me over there with my camera, but he also presents a challenge I felt I had to take on - he's deaf, which made him even more precious to me."

Good deal. I wouldn't have messed with it either. That's definitely the sort of thing you leave to the pros with the right gear.

I've got one of those too, though mine is an old tree that probably won't last another ten years. Of course, I thought that abou ten years ago too. Back then it lost about a quarter of its spread that fell on the railroad right-of-way behind my house. That didn't take out my power though, and the RR took care of it no sweat. When the rest of it goes it almost certainly will take the power line with it, but the odds are west wind and it will fall on the RR property too. Is it wrong of me to let that tree live and see what fate brings? (hint: the more debate the better)

Oh well played, sir; well played indeed! I am playing the same hand with regards to many overly-long branches over the power and phone lines at our house.

Somehow I doubt my outcome will be as felicitous as yours.

Well, there is that niggling detail.

I've got two or three or four of those projects around the house. The work crews have not shown up serendipitously on the doorstep yet, but now I know that they might. Thanks for keeping hope alive, Rob.
