Just another boring summer day

Batten down the hatches, Texas, Hurricane Alex is coming. Possibly a Category 2 by landfall. Not pleasant.

From the Green Bay Press Gazette: Brett Favre retires. A whole section of that publication devoted to it. I shudder at the thought of what the residents of Green Bay will do if Brett leads the Vikings to another sweep of the Packers this season, which is a distinct possibility.

A new kind of gamesmanship. I love it. Must have cost a fortune. Would love to hear an honest reaction from someone in the Colts organization about the impact. I already know what the official reaction is. No impact or no comment.

The joy in an article titled "You thought work was bad? Spouses cause 'more stress than our bosses'" is not in the article, itself, because that's mostly silly fluff. No, the joy is in the comments like the two below which I submit without comment.

Starting to make a rather daunting to do list. The house we moved into 15 years ago brand new and sparkly is starting to turn into a fixer-upper. That it happened as fast as it did is a little discouraging. If only it could get done quickly like it's done in the movies, where time, energy, and money are unlimited ... and they have that cool time lapse thing.

Super Bowl on a Saturday night? No problem here but I imagine every hot Saturday nightspot in the world and even some of the not so hot ones would be pretty pissed off about it. Saturday evening and Saturday night is the most important business time for just about every restaurant, bar, club, movie theater, department store, shopping center, grocery store, and countless other merchants. The NFL has it right. Sunday is the best day to play it.

Lots of stuff on a CrabAppleLane Sunday

It turns out that Group C at the World Cup was a disappointment. The US team went down to Ghana yesterday and the UK team was trounced today by Germany. Won't be much English spoken at the World Cup this year. :)

Seen in a documentary last night: Somewhere in the south during World War II, nine black US Marines watched as white Army prison guards escorted German POWs into a restaurant that the Marines were told they couldn't enter. My guess is the restaurant owners probably fancied themselves as patriots, too. Enemy troops welcome, our own troops not? Patriots isn't the first word that comes to mind here.

LSU football and baseball star, Chad Jones, was injured in a horrific automobile crash in New Orleans Friday morning. He is one of two student athletes to play on a National Champion in both baseball and football. The other is his teammate at LSU, Jared Mitchell. The future was really bright for Chad. He was drafted in the 3rd round by the New York Giants to play safety. He's a fantastic athlete. He's a more polished football player at this point but I really thought his career was going to be in baseball. Although he's shown below playing right field, he surprised his teammates and head coach while throwing some pitches one day last year just horsing around. He's a left-handed pitcher that throws very hard (Low 90s). He's very raw and had almost no formal pitching instruction. I thought he was a great prospect. All of that is in jeopardy now. Good Luck, Chad.

Just for fun, I offer the "Girls with Glasses" below. The sound is great but the person who shot the video fooled around a little too much to suit me. I don't know much about them but I think they're four individual artists that collaborated for one tour. They are fantastic together. Enjoy.

Alchemy Live - Dire Straits

I've been waiting a long time for Alchemy Live to be released in the US on DVD. I originally saw it on MTV in the 80s and recorded it on VHS. Even though the music and their performance is off-the-charts fantastic, the quality of the broadcast was really bad and my recording of it was even worse. This remastered DVD is crystal clear and a joy to behold. My collection of this concert contains that VHS broadcast recording off of MTV, the vinyl record version, the CD record version, and now, the remastered DVD version. Some day, I'll probably have the Blue Ray version, too. Mark Knopfler is the founder, lead guitarist, songwriter, and lead singer of Dire Straits. He is a virtuoso guitarist and songwriter. He has some incredible long guitar solos on Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, and Tunnel of Love. A lot of guitar solos are a little boring because the guitarist wants to show off his techno-wizardry skill on the guitar. Knopfler's solos are musical. I've only had it long enough to skip around to some of my favorite cuts on my PC. Can't wait to see it cranked up in DTS 5.1 surround sound. Not recommending anyone buy it unless they're a fan but I highly recommend that you at least try to rent it. I guarantee a night of great music.

USA v Ghana today in the World Cup --- GEAUX USA

I should be out in the yard this morning but I got too late a start and it's just too darn hot now. Did that in the heat a few weeks ago. On that day, I stayed as hydrated as I could even though I think the water I drank pretty much just sweated right out as I was drinking it, and I still just about fainted from the heat and humidity. I don't think I have ever been that overheated before.

About today's QOTD: That's probably still true. I can say one thing without hesitation, though. There is not a soul in New Orleans or along the Gulf Coast who would trade Drew Brees for either of those great quarterbacks.

For the record, I am the lousiest cat herder in the history of cat herding.

Silly across the board. The idea is silly because the domain, as proposed, will not replace the current community of p-0-r-n websites, which is their current selling point. It will simply be a new resource for them. All of the opposition's time and resources should be devoted to developing technology to keep anyone from running across it on the web accidentally. Those looking for it are going to find it and if they're an adult, that's their business.

I thought it was Americans who had their priorities screwed up regarding their sports. In France, their President is looking into their World Cup team's poor showing. The article describes the French reaction to their team coming home and the whole thing is more than a little disturbing. A taste from the AP via ESPN:

Sarkozy has vowed to personally investigate the matter. He met with prime minister Francois Fillon and sports minister Roselyne Bachelot on Wednesday to discuss ways to reform French soccer.

That's Presidential, isn't it?

The thing about Facebook

Well, there are many. The biggest one is that they're just too big for the staff they have. In case you hadn't noticed, posts disappear and reappear, things that worked one day stop the next, and there are most definitely some programming issues like asking you to add friends that already have too many friends. Finding help is difficult and getting help is impossible. Today's QOTD is the latest one I ran across. That feature stopped working for me yesterday. If there was an announcement somewhere, I missed it. On finding help for that: I did not find anything anywhere that addresses it. Any post I found by Facebook that might have drifted away and addressed that feature has thousands of comments. I can read 30-40 comments on something but I will never get far into a conversation that has that many.

A World Cup Oddity and some basketball

The US Team takes the field, the pitch, whatever against Algeria today. If they win, they advance to the next round. If they lose, they're out and that's as it should be. If they play to yet another draw and the UK wins, the US team will be eliminated even though they'd still be undefeated. Can you imagine what kind of setback that would be for the popularity of that sport in America? Not only are we not wild about draws but to me and to most Americans, elimination should only come after defeat. On the flip side, a draw is all they need to advance if the UK loses. Advancing without victory is every bit as stupid as elimination without defeat. I don't see Americans ever embracing this sport like the rest of the world does but GEAUX USA.

I think the Hornets will trade Chris Paul if the right offer comes up. His situation in New Orleans is starting to resemble the LeBron James situation in Cleveland. He's the face of the franchise but they have too many missing pieces and too many other problems, mostly financial, to be a serious contender for at least another year or two.

The article raises as many questions about its author as it does about the command culture surrounding McChrystal. It is difficult to fathom that any reporter would be granted warts-and-all access to the inner sanctum, with no strings attached. Were there any? It is equally hard to understand how members of Team America could feel free to speak as unguardedly as they did -- much less cut loose under the influence of alcohol, as Hastings described it -- and expect a good journalist in their midst to not record his observations.

Tuesday Tomatoes

Tomatoes are starting to wind down here. They're not getting as big this year as previous years but I'm thinking that's due to the extra hot weather this season. Size has no bearing on flavor and size never concerns me anyway. I may take a picture of them occasionally but I don't grow them to look at them. I grow them to eat them and these are delicious. Another quirk of this growing season is that I've lost very few to rot and I haven't lost any at all to worms. I always lose a few, sometimes quite a few, to worms. I have fewer bushes this season but I'm still picking considerably more than we can eat. I gave away several dozen over the weekend. Most of the ones pictured below were picked last night. Bon Appetit.

The Blue Dog is fairly famous in New Orleans but not so famous elsewhere that two stolen paintings will attract a large price from a collector that won't mind that they were stolen. This guy, who doesn't much resemble Alexander Mundy, probably wanted them for himself. I'm guessing he'll be caught and the paintings will be recovered.

Monday Missives - June 21, 2010 Issue

98º here at CrabAppleLane yesterday with a heat index of 110º. The first day of summer was a good day to stay indoors.

Drew and Baylen Brees threw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium yesterday. They're living large these days. Well deserved. I prefer his Saints cap to the Yankees cap but I suppose it's OK for a day ... in June.

About web ads: I've been seeing a lot of them lately as I'm sure you have, too. Advertisers aren't getting much bang for their buck in print media and television advertising is expensive so we're seeing much, much more of it on the web, where it is still relatively cheap. Unfortunately for all of us, advertisers haven't yet figured out how to be effective without being obnoxious, intrusive, and annoying but what really gets me lately is that many of the ads are only supposed to be for a few seconds and then we're supposed to be taken to the content we want to see but we're only getting the ads. I'm guessing the advertisers have no problem with this web shortcoming on some sites, though.

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day, Dad - Miss you

Just a few tidbits on a hot CrabAppleLane Sunday.

  • The CrabAppleLane Award for the kid who had to have had one of the most awful times in school goes to Clement von Franckenstein. Do you think there are any Frankenstein jokes he hasn't heard? He was in a movie we watched yesterday.
  • Just say NO to a longer NFL season. There ought to be a "No Tinker" rule in the NFL. They should only be able to tinker with the game, except for issues regarding player safety, at 10 year intervals. Let the game evolve naturally.
  • 16381 spam comments on this blog have been blocked since I activated TypePad AntiSpam (June 2008). That's a ridiculous number for an obscure place such as this, don't you think?
  • When I close an ad on Facebook as "uninteresting", I get the following response:
Thanks for your feedback. Over time, this information helps us deliver more relevant ads to you.
For the record, I don't find that to be a particularly desirable result, either. I suppose I should just ignore them.
  • What ever happened to those "Baseball Fever: Catch It" commercials? I used to love those. This play by Minnesota Twins catcher, Joe Mauer, would definitely make a good one. I meant to link that awesome play last week but I forgot. I saw it on a show I've been recording off of the MLB channel called the Plays of the Week. If you love baseball, I highly recommend it. They count down the 100 best plays of the week. It's nothing but clutch hits and defensive gems. That they can find 100 in every week's worth of games is part of baseball's magic
.
  • About today's QOTD: I commented on that when I read about it but I didn't add the great zinger. I have serious issues with the Irsay family for moving that team out of Baltimore and I have issues with the way Bill Polian runs the team but those 53 players deserve better fans than they've got considering what that team has done not only in the last 8-10 years but pretty much the majority of their time in Indianapolis. The Saints would have had more than 11 fans welcoming them home even if they'd have lost the Super Bowl by a hundred. One other thing on that. A Colts fan had this to say in the Indianapolis Star:
But we were so out-numbered in the stands by these "poor down-troddened'' New Orleans Saints fans that we could not even be heard. It seemed to be that the Saints fans either were given more tickets or given better deals that kept all of us hard-working, middle class true-blue Colts fans home.

Setting aside the silly notion that ALL Saints fans are "down-troddened'', what she's saying is not an indictment of New Orleans. It's an indictment of Indianapolis. Colts fans had the exact same opportunities for tickets Saints fans had and, still, the "down-troddened" outnumbered the "hard-working, middle class true-blue". It wasn't better deals. It was better fans.

I offer two from the same area of the CrabAppleLane backyard six months apart. Love the contrast between drab January and sunny June. Prefer the weather in drab January, though. It is miserably hot outside.

When in Rome

When in Rome was the movie choice last night. We both liked the trailers we saw of this film when it came out but it didn't thrill us enough to pay theater prices. When in Rome is a romantic comedy that thrives almost exclusively on the strength and likability of the two leads, Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. They are both up to the task and I should say that's a bit unusual for me. Typically, it's the leads' best friends or siblings that makes these movies for me. Anjelica Huston and Danny DeVito are on hand to lend adult supervision, I suppose. I wonder how they were approached for this. They're both a bit overqualified for their roles. When in Rome has a lot of good moments and not too many syrupy ones. Worth your time.

Another draw for the US team in the World Cup? I can feel soccer's popularity soaring in the hearts and minds of all sport-loving Americans ... maybe 30-40-50 years from now.

Congrats to the Lakers on their 16th NBA title. Tried to stay with it but just ran out of gas in the 4th quarter. Basketball-sleep? Sleep-basketball? Sorry, basketball.

Looks like my server database problems are still unresolved. Sorry if it slowed you down or frustrated you the last few days. It's unfortunately out of my hands.

My old buddy, Mike Florio, on the upcoming NFL season:

And, yes, Who Dat nation, I've arrived at the end of my list and omitted the Saints. This means that they'll be on the list of the six teams most likely to get bounced.

I really don't have anything to say about an opinion. Everyone has one. The Saints are a veteran group. They don't need a lot of rah rah rah motivation. They need not look hard for it if they did, though. It's fashionable in sports punditry to go against the grain. It wasn't that long ago that the pundits were writing things like this. Despite an offense coming back wholly intact and a better-than-advertised defense with another year under their coach's belt, the majority opinion seems to be that they're in for a rough year. Maybe so. Still, I'd like to see someone in that world go against the grain and declare that, maybe, just maybe, well, never mind ... may be best they continue doing what they're doing. It worked so well for them ... and me ... last year. :)

Don't have any tickets yet but I will before the deadline. Can't imagine that I'd wear it much because I'm not a big fan of bling but it would be delightful to have.

I've been encountering a bit of wonk here. Seems to be a global internet thing. Have been encountering wonk at all of the sites I visit regularly. I think the entire internet is overloaded at some time during any average day. The response from my server yesterday:

I am sorry to hear of the difficulty you are experiencing with your site in your Hosting package. Our Engineers are aware of an issue causing latency on our MySQL servers. Please understand that this is a top priority and they are diligently working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

So far, the intermittent problems here have been limited to the CrabAppleLane Forum database but I suppose that could eventually turn up here on the blogs, too. Update: Right on cue, the wonk came out and froze the website up while I was trying to save this entry. As soon as I was able to get to it after the thaw, I had three copies of this entry. I promise this tripe isn't remotely interesting enough to do in triplicate.

Not a big fan of using the BP tragedy to advance energy strategy and I realize we'll never be able to set aside the politics but an intelligent energy strategy should have been set in motion during the first oil embargo (1973), when everyone should have realized how dependent we are on that one source of energy. Almost everyone knows not to put all of their eggs in one basket yet that's where we are today. Why? We should be a lot further along towards independence not because it will save the environment although I can think of reasons worse than that. No, we should be further along because dependence is such an awful thing. The other reasons to move away from it, though important, are secondary. Moving away from oil dependence is surely going to be controversial and expensive. The oil companies and their dependents in government and in the economy will see to it. That's the reality. It will take a government effort on the order of a new Manhattan Project to overcome that reality. We're still not quite desperate enough to initialize such a project but I think we're finally getting there.

Muscle memory is a bitch when you're ascending or descending stairs with arthritic knees. A certain amount of effort that used to elevate your leg high enough or used to extend your leg down enough a few years ago doesn't any more and there are dire consequences for it. It's not like riding a bike.

The QOTD is some of my all-time favorite rock 'n' roll lyrics from a song with one of the great titles.

Rings

The QOTD comes from the Saints All-Pro center, Jonathan Goodwin. He's the 300lb blur who mauled the Colt linebacker that might have had a play on Pierre Thomas in the Super Bowl on the Saints first touchdown. The sound man must have been very close because that BIG hit came through loud and clear on the broadcast. The Saints are getting their Super Bowl rings tonight.

GEAUX Saints.

Body painting. Think maybe someone has figured out a way to popularize soccer for at least some of the masses: Use hot naked women. Wonder what took them so long to figure that one out.

The BOTD is from BP. Wonder who got to write that press release. I read it but don't feel any more informed now than I did before I read it.

A beginner's guide to the vuvuzela. They're irritating but they're also starting to grow on me. I do not favor banning them at the World Cup. One comment at the linked piece said it for me: "Gone those great chants like "the referee's a wanker" Viva Vuvezela! Get used to it". South Africa is the host and they bring vuvuzelas to the matches. Deal with it. The vuvuzelas are not ruining the World Cup. To be honest, they're not saving it for many of us, either. :) If I watch another match on TV, I'll turn the sound up and down as necessary. For those of you actually at the match, Drew and Baylen Brees have the solution: Noise-canceling headphones.

The Saints got Pierre Thomas signed yesterday but there's still work to be done on a long-term deal. I don't think they're as far apart as their postures indicate or nearly as far apart as the pundits are saying. The Saints got him dirt cheap three years ago as a rookie free agent but he'd also not be the player he is today if they hadn't taken a chance on him. I think the two sides will work it out.

Flags, vuvuzelas, and oil

Flag Day 2009
Flag Day - June 14, 2010

Today's QOTD refers to the steady drone heard at World Cup Soccer games. The sound is made by a plastic horn called a vuvuzela. It's rather annoying on TV and that's with ESPN sound mixers reducing the noise. As for the French team not being able to hear each other, maybe it's better if they can't. When they can ...

On another note, a very disappointing column from a British online via Marie. I think my favorite line from that twit is this:

Quite apart from the fact that Hayward and his colleagues have every interest in plugging the spill, for years past BP has filled Washington's coffers with tax revenue, and fed the American people's unquenchable thirst for cheap petrol.
Let us pause to give thanks to BP for their philanthropy. The hundreds of billions they got out of it are merely incidental.

The notable sound has sparked a debate whether the vuvuzela adds or takes away from the World Cup experience."

Congrats to the USA World Cup team on a draw? I've tried it a few times now and I am simply not getting why the entire world goes cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs over soccer. Carry on.

ESPN.com has taken a big lead in my search for a new fantasy football website for 2010. Many thanks to my friend, Dave, for helping me get past the obstacle I couldn't get past on my own. It offers most of what I'm looking for and only has a couple of minor drawbacks. I'm about 99% committed.

It's hot at CrabAppleLane today. Love the shade our backyard trees provide. I planted two of them, myself. They're the tow you see here, Bradford Pear in the foreground and Chinese Tallow in the background. They're getting big and starting to block the satellite signal. They're also keeping grass from growing in areas where we always had grass. Not sure what I want to do about it yet. Hate the thought of cutting one or both down only slightly less than I hate the thought of moving the satellite dish. I offer one from the shady, but still very hot, CrabAppleLane backyard.

Saturday Stuff - June 12, 2010 Issue

Just heard a ESPN sportscaster on the TV in the other room say, "They are undefeated when outscoring the other team no matter what color jersey they wear.". Can't argue with that. Well done.

Minnesota Vikings Head Coach, Brad Childress, is a bit miffed at his star running back for missing a mandatory practice. Not miffed at his star quarterback for missing a mandatory practice, though, because that is a "special circumstance". This is all good theater but I don't expect there to be much disgruntlement on the sidelines when the season starts except from maybe the backup quarterbacks. The Vikes have a very good team and will be ready to play September 9.

Friday Fluff - June 11, 2010 Issue

The summer rut is upon us. Rain, heat, work, rinse, repeat. Good tomatoes, though.

You won't get me to dispute that the NCAA dropped the hammer on USC or that they deserved it. They just dropped it on the wrong nail. They're punishing today's players and coaches for yesterday's players' and coaches' sins. The problem for the NCAA is they can't get at yesterday's players and coaches. They've all moved on. Today's scholarship athletes should have the right to not only move on but to continue to count against USC's scholarships, not their new university's.

The front runner website for the upcoming fantasy football season for at least one of my leagues. There are some minor differences from our past service that I will ask our owners to adapt to but there is also one major issue that has to be fixed before I commit. They're working on the problem and expect to have it working by the weekend. It's free. I like the price, of course, but "free" always concerns me. "Free" removes your right to have expectations. I do have expectations, though. If they can just deliver on what they're advertising, that will be fine.

A welcome lift

A needed and welcome lift for those working on the oil cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico. ESPN's decision to analyze the impact on the Saints and the upcoming season was in poor taste. It wasn't about that. The right thing to do was to take it at face value and leave it at that. A visit by the team brings a lift to those involved and maybe some awareness to the effort. That's what it was about. There is no additional support to be gained. They've got all of it. There is positive PR to be sure but I'm here to tell you the Saints don't need any positive PR in Louisiana. They're a hundred feet tall and have positive PR up to their eyeballs in Louisiana right now.

Heartbreak

I don't think you have to be an animal lover to have your heart break at the sight of brown pelicans covered in oil or all of those dead turtles and fish that we're seeing all over the news here in Louisiana. I'd surely like to see BP get out of the damage control to their image business and into the damage control for the damage they caused to everything else business.

I hope the Saints and Pierre Thomas can reach agreement on a long term deal. He's a favorite here and he has earned a healthy raise. He's high balling a little but the Saints are low balling a little, too. He's played great for three years for next to nothing as an undrafted free agent. Unfortunately for Pierre, the Saints have a lot of playmakers. I just don't know how they're going to pay all of them. Drew Brees' contract is on the horizon. That one figures to be over $100 million.

There are times I wish I had MLB Extra Innings. It was sacrificed at the budget altar a few years ago along with the NFL Sunday Ticket. Would kinda like to see these kids' debuts tomorrow night. I know summer doesn't officially start until June 20-21 but I just about fainted yesterday afternoon in the sweltering heat at CrabAppleLane and the sun wasn't even shining most of that time. The high 80s temps are manageable so I'm thinking the 100% humidity might have been the culprit. I don't know how these guys were doing what they were doing. You'd think someone (Me) who has lived here his entire life would be used to the heat and humidity by now. I don't think you ever get used to it.

There will be a new NCAA Baseball National Champion. The LSU Tigers were sent home yesterday by UC-Irvine. All of the problems they were having prior to the SEC Tournament showed up again during the regional. Slow starts in the last two games doomed them. Except for the four games they played in the SEC Tournament, they have not played very well this season considering the level of talent and experience on that team. Disappointing but they are where they belong today ... at home watching.

Good night, Gracie.

I offer two from the CrabAppleLane backyard on this hot and humid first tomato harvest Sunday. That rain water you see in the rain gauge is the weekend's worth but easily could have been the sweat that poured off my nose this afternoon. The larger tomatoes are Creole tomatoes and the smaller ones are Sweet 100 Hybrid Cherry Tomatoes. The first Creoles to ripen are usually medium-sized. The larger ones don't start coming in for another two weeks or so. Size has zero bearing on flavor. Variety and degree of ripeness are all that matters. I have my eye on one of these for supper tonight. Not hard to figure out which one. I like them red RED RED.

Wooden, Porter, and other stuff

R.I.P., John Wooden. I doubt there is a single good adjective that doesn't apply to him. The QOTD is his.

The Saints' Tracy Porter is making a habit out of intercepting great quarterbacks. He picked off Brett Favre in the NFC Championship, Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl, and Drew Brees yesterday in practice. For you NFL fans, Tracy is entering his 3rd season as a pro and should only be better this year. They have all of the pieces to make another run this season. There is nothing in their way but past history. They kicked that to the curb last year and I look forward to them doing it again this year.

GEAUX Saints

I've set aside yardwork today for a little while to do fantasy football research. I know, hard choice. The two leagues I'm in are actively searching for a new website this season. The one we've used the last 10 years has been good to us but a desire to move on to one of the big boys has been expressed by many of the players. We're looking mainly for feature-rich websites that we can configure. We want what we've always had plus as many new bells and whistles as we can find. ESPN.com is out. Some of their limitations are dealbreakers. NFL.com is almost out. They're supposedly working on the one absolute dealbreaker I've encountered but they'll have to have it fixed before I find a website that doesn't have any dealbreakers. Yahoo looks Mickey Mouse and will be held as a last resort. CBS-Sportsline wants credit card information BEFORE I can access the 14-day free commissioner trial. Not a chance of that. The search continues ...

LSU and UC-Irvine played a wild one yesterday in Los Angeles. The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to take the 11-10 win. They'll take on host UCLA tonight. The Bruins are in mourning at the passing of John Wooden. It will be an emotional night, I suspect.

A little infamy

Looks like the commissioner of baseball is digging in on overturning Wednesday's infamous call. From ESPN:

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he would not reverse the call, but would examine expanding instant replay in baseball.

Why not reverse the call? Pitcher Armando Galarraga's name deserves a place alongside Catfish Hunter, Don Larsen, and Sandy Koufax. No one disputes that. Bud wouldn't be giving him anything. He earned it. Umpire Jim Joyce and his family shouldn't have his honest mistake haunt them the rest of their lives. Let's not hear that "integrity of the game" crap. There's no integrity, no sanctity, no purity to be preserved here. If the purists had their way, players would still leave their gloves in the field, there would be no designated hitter, no divisional playoffs, no interleague play, no night baseball. Why give in to those twits, Bud? You're not one of them. It's their lot in life to complain about everything so let them complain. The only thing being preserved here is injustice. Fixable injustice. Baseball gains nothing by letting it stand. Nothing. Don't dig in, Bud. Dig out.

Put me on board for having Commissioner Bud Selig overturn this horrible call. I'm not normally a fan of selective intervention but baseball did overturn the call against George Brett and the Royals in the pine tar game. Precedent is there. That decision changed a result, wasn't the end of the world, and didn't lead baseball down the slippery slope to whatever is at the bottom of that slippery slope. This one would only change a box score and would have zero impact on the standings or anything else except that which only matters to baseball's purists. Perfect games just don't come along all that often ... except for this year. Took over a hundred years to record the first 18. Took two months, actually just three weeks since the first one came on Mother's Day, to record the last 3 this season. This error is fixable. Give the perfect game to Armando Galarraga because he earned it and fix the scoring on the last two batters. It's really not as big a deal to do as you'll make it out to be so don't wait months or years to do it. Get it done before his next start.

I think maybe the Sex and the City franchise may have finally run its course. I never really got it but that's another story. Most of the reviews I've seen are like this one, only not as funny.

It is the first movie I ever watched in surround sound at home. I digress. My concern these days with ALL movies is that the trailer probably gives up every good moment in the film. Hope that's not the case here. I'm in need of a CME fix.

I ran across today's BOTD at Disarranging Mine. Awesome.

About today's QOTD: With apologies to my Viking fan friends and relatives, I just couldn't resist that line from the "NFL Expert". I wouldn't have expressed that sentiment that way but I'm no expert.

Quote of the Day
You can find so much to like about the Vikings that you would be hard-pressed not to call Minnesota the prettiest girl in the NFC.
Dan Pompei, MSNBC NFL Expert

Hard to believe the girl who played the twins in the remade Parent Trap is now playing Linda Lovelace. Looks like the film makers are portraying Lovelace as a victim of sorts. I never saw any of her X-rated movies but I did see one of her R-rated ones. I want to say this is it but I honestly don't remember. It was awful. Not sure what to make of the notion of Lovelace as victim. I was in high school when she became famous for porn. What I remember about her is that she was quite frank about her business at the time.

Hurricane Season starts today ... with crude oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico ... just lovely.

100 days until football season ...

About the QOTD: Not often I agree with Peter King but he hits it on the head here.

Quote of the Day
I don't see how I can ever go to a BP gas station again, unless I'm on fumes, for the rest of my life.

We shouldn't drill one more well at sea until such time that we have foolproof methods of capping wells in the event of disasters like the one ruining the Gulf of Mexico right now.
Peter King, Sports Illustrated

Quote from said blog: "Joining UCLA in Westwood as the two seed is LSU, the defending national champions who just won the SEC Tournament. The three seed is UC Irvine, who finished second in the Big West, and the four seed is Kent St., champions of the MAC Tournament."
