Thursday Tidbits - June 17, 2010 Issue

Those Saints Super Bowl rings are from Tiffany and reportedly go for about $30k/ea. The Saints are raffling one to help with the Gulf Coast cleanup. Don't have any tickets yet but I will before the deadline. Can't imagine that I'd wear it much because I'm not a big fan of bling but it would be delightful to have.

I've been encountering a bit of wonk here. Seems to be a global internet thing. Have been encountering wonk at all of the sites I visit regularly. I think the entire internet is overloaded at some time during any average day. The response from my server yesterday:

I am sorry to hear of the difficulty you are experiencing with your site in your Hosting package. Our Engineers are aware of an issue causing latency on our MySQL servers. Please understand that this is a top priority and they are diligently working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

So far, the intermittent problems here have been limited to the CrabAppleLane Forum database but I suppose that could eventually turn up here on the blogs, too. Update: Right on cue, the wonk came out and froze the website up while I was trying to save this entry. As soon as I was able to get to it after the thaw, I had three copies of this entry. I promise this tripe isn't remotely interesting enough to do in triplicate.

Not a big fan of using the BP tragedy to advance energy strategy and I realize we'll never be able to set aside the politics but an intelligent energy strategy should have been set in motion during the first oil embargo (1973), when everyone should have realized how dependent we are on that one source of energy. Almost everyone knows not to put all of their eggs in one basket yet that's where we are today. Why? We should be a lot further along towards independence not because it will save the environment although I can think of reasons worse than that. No, we should be further along because dependence is such an awful thing. The other reasons to move away from it, though important, are secondary. Moving away from oil dependence is surely going to be controversial and expensive. The oil companies and their dependents in government and in the economy will see to it. That's the reality. It will take a government effort on the order of a new Manhattan Project to overcome that reality. We're still not quite desperate enough to initialize such a project but I think we're finally getting there.

Muscle memory is a bitch when you're ascending or descending stairs with arthritic knees. A certain amount of effort that used to elevate your leg high enough or used to extend your leg down enough a few years ago doesn't any more and there are dire consequences for it. It's not like riding a bike.

The QOTD is some of my all-time favorite rock 'n' roll lyrics from a song with one of the great titles.

5 song iTune shuffle from the CrabAppleLane Five Star playlist starting with "B":

  1. Ballroom Blitz - Sweet -Rock Of The 70's
  2. Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks, 1964-1971 [Disc 2]
  3. Black Betty - Ram Jam - Hard N' Heavy: 70's Greatest Rock Hits, Vol. 1
  4. Burning Bridges - The Mike Curb Congregation - Greatest Hits
  5. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Quote of the Day
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time
So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
Meatloaf, Paradise by the Dashboard Light

Blog of the day is here.

Quote from said blog: "A new national energy strategy has been labeled too controversial, too uncertain, too costly and too far into the future to demand immediate action."
