Flag Day - June 14, 2010
Today's QOTD refers to the steady drone heard at World Cup Soccer games. The sound is made by a plastic horn called a vuvuzela. It's rather annoying on TV and that's with ESPN sound mixers reducing the noise. As for the French team not being able to hear each other, maybe it's better if they can't. When they can ...
On another note, a very disappointing column from a British online via Marie. I think my favorite line from that twit is this:
Quite apart from the fact that Hayward and his colleagues have every interest in plugging the spill, for years past BP has filled Washington's coffers with tax revenue, and fed the American people's unquenchable thirst for cheap petrol.Let us pause to give thanks to BP for their philanthropy. The hundreds of billions they got out of it are merely incidental.

Quote of the Day
France captain Patrice Evra has already blamed the noise generated by the vuvuzelas for his team's poor showing in its opening 0-0 draw with Uruguay.

Blog of the day is here.
Quote from said blog: "Without a doubt, the defining sound of the tournament has been the droning sound of the vuvuzela, which can be heard by spectators attending the games or by the television viewer. The notable sound has sparked a debate whether the vuvuzela adds or takes away from the World Cup experience."

What is this "soccer" that you speak of? :)
It appears to be good exercise, Dave, but not much else. There's a net at each end of the field that are in considerable danger of dry rot due to inactivity. :)
Hey, we're on the same page regarding the vuvuzelas. As to the soccer, yeah, it's exhausting to watch a game played without a 45-second pause after every 10 seconds of activity. ;>
Could be exhaustion, Dan. I thought maybe it was boredom. :) As for that other game you refer to, the last two I saw both produced 9 scores in those 10-12 minutes of activity over 60-minute matches. No vuvuzelas, though. There were 2 scores produced in 90+ minutes of nonstop activity in the last soccer match I watched. Don't knock those 45-second pauses. :)
I finally heard those vuvuzelas in a news story last night. Good grief. Soccer is annoying enough as it is, but those things make it intolerable.
I find them as irritating as you do, Dave, but I don't favor banning them at the games unless/until they start finding their way onto the pitch (What a stupid thing to call the playing field).
