White or clear

I really didn't think it would matter if the silicone sealer was clear or white. I had some white silicone sealer on hand. I could hear a sound in one of my closets that's next to the plumbing stack. It could have been just the PVC pipe rubbing against wood as it expands or contracts with the hot shower water or it could have been a drip. I decided to reseal the shower drain. I might add that it's a rather disgusting job and I'll have to redo it because I don't like the way it looks. Someone good at this could probably have gotten the white silicone in just the places it needed to be and have it completely hidden underneath the stainless steel shower grate ... and then there's me. The white silicone can be seen. I'll get some clear silicone and add this job to the ever growing to do list. I still don't know where I stand. I didn't hear a thing while the shower was going this morning but I started hearing it again right after it stopped. There is no water seeping through the Sheetrock, though. And, now, it has stopped. I hate mysteries like this, particularly because it's water-related. See QOTD.

I offer three from the CrabAppleLane Yard. It was the first real yardwork I've done since late October, I think. As usual, the front yard is ahead of the backyard. It really doesn't start looking good until the second or third time out.

Priscilla came to us when she was 8. She took her final ride to the vet yesterday just 7 weeks short of her 22nd birthday. She lounged in the CrabAppleLane sun by the pond for about an hour before we got in the truck. Good pet owners always struggle with "Are we too soon or too late?" and it probably won't mean much to any good pet owner but I think we all do it at the exact right time. Priscilla had been frail for a few weeks but she was still eating, still moving around, still grooving on pets and scratches, and still had a bit of a twinkle in her eye. She stopped eating and became dehydrated. Patsy took her to the vet Thursday and he gave her an IV drip to administer twice a day to rehydrate her but she still wasn't eating and had some other issues related to her arthritis that led us to the conclusion that she was unhappy and just did not want to go on. She had a good, long run and we'll miss her terribly. She was a sweetheart.

Mardi Gras got into gear in the Greater New Orleans area Friday night. We ran into unexpected parade traffic in Abita Sprigs yesterday coming home from the vet's office. We diverted ourselves to Slidell (25 miles away) for lunch. The inconvenience was acceptable because a good ride and diversion helped us, I think, in the state we were in.

I think today's QOTD is right. I was originally hoping they'd go for a big, durable running back in the first round but I think finding one of those is more a matter of luck than research.

I offer two from the CrabAppleLane yard this morning. Spring is almost here. Plan to do first yardwork this afternoon, weather permitting. I had hoped to do some work on The Clearing Project every winter but this winter was colder than most. Poor excuse but it's the one I have at the moment.

Shocked at the unprecedented level of violence, the regime has been condemned by the GCC as well as the OIC and been suspended from the Arab League. The significance of the latter is immense. The only other Arab state ever to have its membership suspended was Egypt in 1979 following its peace deal with Israel. Even Iraq was not suspended when it invaded Kuwait in 1990. The Qaddafi regime has become a pariah in the Arab and Muslim world. Only countries like Cuba and Venezuela support it — which says everything about their moral compass.

The Saints released tight end Jeremy Shockey yesterday. No surprise whatsoever. His contract is much too large for his diminishing role on the team. I was hoping they could work out a deal on his salary but I think it best that he test the market before doing that here. Rookie phenom Jimmy Graham really came on late last season and that made Shockey expendable. Everyone wants to see more of Graham next year. Note to fantasy football players: Graham looks like the next Gates/Gonzales but he's bigger and faster than both of them ever were and Brees likes to use him. He'll go very high around here but other players elsewhere might be able to get him cheap.

Finally made a little headway into speeding things up around here. Comments are still the big issue, though. I'm not at all satisfied with the performance I'm getting in that area. The problem I'm having right now is that all searches I perform related to my issue are from 2006-2007-2008. I'd like to find something a little more current. By the way, I have that same information problem with WordPress. I installed the latest of WordPress and everything I found on the problem I'm having is from 2006-2007-2008. Someone on their team should know about it by now and it should have been resolved several versions ago. That puts me off a little.

GEAUX Tigers. Nice sweep this weekend over Wake Forest. Tiger fans gave a well-deserved standing ovation to the Demon Deacons Head Coach Tom Walter when he was announced in Friday's opener. Coach Walter donated a kidney to one of his players. The kindness ended with the ovation. The Tigers scored 6 runs in the first inning, 6 more in the second, and coasted home for a 15-4 win in the opener. A close win Saturday and another blowout yesterday completed the sweep. It's still early but the Tigers are off to a good start and that's always a good thing.

A one for nine trade. Wish I'd gotten to see him play although it would mean I'd have to be quite a bit older. R.I.P, Ollie.

The Cranberry's Liar was on the Empire Records soundtrack and is the only reason I have it.

More wrestlemania

The QOTD offers a bit more on yesterday's entry about the boy who "defaulted" his match rather than wrestle the girl he was matched against. It's from someone who agrees with me that his decision wasn't as praiseworthy as people made it out to be. Reilly's piece goes more in depth and I couldn't agree with him more. This was the topic of last night's local call-in radio show, too. From the five minutes that I listened to, my guess is he and I probably held the minority opinion. Not a new experience here. What I didn't mention is what his decision meant for his opponent. Instead of a wrestling meet, it turned into a media circus and she had reporters all around her. All she wanted to do was wrestle. Though he has no control over the media and I'm not blaming him for the circus but actions have consequences. What he did turned out to be totally unfair to her. One last thing: If I'm his wrestling coach, he will wrestle whoever he draws next year or he's off the team.

Friday Fluff

Today's QOTD is about a young man who defaulted his match and a shot at a championship rather than wrestle a girl. Gentleman? Maybe, but I don't think we can stop there although the article surely does. All you read about there is "respect" for his decision. Not sure I agree with that.

I wrestled in high school because it was required. Wrestling is a physical sport and a contact sport. There is no way around it. It's also pretty intimate. You are all over your opponent and your opponent is all over you. I, myself, would have been uncomfortable wrestling a girl in my day. Here's the thing: It's not my day any more. Like it or not, boys and girls, men and women compete against each other and alongside each other in areas they never used to. When is the time to learn about that? High school, perhaps? Joel competes in a sport that allows girls and boys to compete against each other. Was he hoping someone else would have to wrestle the girls? If he objected to the possibility of wrestling any potential opponent, he should not have joined the team. Instead, he hurt his team by "defaulting". It's crappy that he was allowed to default. You default when you're injured and can't compete when your match is scheduled. Defaulting allows you to compete in later consolation rounds if you are able. He wasn't injured. He should have had to forfeit.

I'll take his statement at face value that his beliefs didn't allow him to wrestle her and that he was not just afraid of losing. She was a freshman with a 20-13 record. 33 others made a different decision and it looks like 13 of them were happy about it. :) He was a sophomore with more experience and a better record. We'll never know if she could have competed with him. He never gave her the chance.

A little baseball

R.I.P., Chuck Tanner. He managed the last great Pittsburgh Pirates team. That team executed the best defensive play I ever saw. Wish I could find a video of it. With a runner on first, the hitter blasted a pitch to deep right center field. Center fielder Omar Moreno and right fielder Dave Parker converged on it. Left-handed Moreno caught it on the first bounce with his right glove hand. He flipped the ball with his glove to Parker. Parker wheeled and fired the ball to the cutoff man (Phil Garner, I think) who then wheeled and fired to the plate to nail the runner. It is not that unusual to see a guy make a great defensive play in Major League Baseball but to see four guys dazzle you on one play, well, that's baseball. Those Tanner Pirate teams were a lot of fun. Thanks, Chuck.

I have to wonder what the St Louis Cardinals are thinking about Albert Pujols. They're trying to negotiate a new contract with him because his contract expires after this season. Their offer to him was characterized recently as "in baseball's top 10 in salary, but not in the top five in average annual salary". If that's true, it is ludicrous. I'd have to think long and hard about who the other top four players are but Pujols is the best player in baseball in my opinion. The gold standard are contracts given to Alex Rodriguez and Joe Mauer. Albert is more valuable to his team than those two are to theirs. A lesser offer is not a starting point. It's just a waste of everyone's time. If Pujols doesn't get a comparable contract from the Cardinals, he'll get it somewhere else.

A lousy offseason

About today's QOTD: It's from an op-ed that's appearing in newspapers today. I'd like to know why the NFL "needs" a new stadium in Los Angeles, Roger. There is no team there. Has the threat of moving existing teams there lost its cache? L.A. has rejected two NFL teams and has done just fine without a team for a long time now. That's what really galls you, isn't it?

A box inside a box inside a ...

Everyone knows the gag where you give a gift that's one box inside another inside another inside another and on and on until the gigantic box really contains something fairly small. While cleaning a ceiling fan a few weeks ago, I was washing one of the glass shades and it slipped out of my hand. As I tried to catch it, I didn't get my hand all the way around it and I ended up slamming it down even harder tha nit was already falling. Naturally, it cracked. We couldn't find a single replacement locally, couldn't find a set of four that we liked as much locally, so we went online and found it.

What you see below is the extreme opposite of what I whined about almost three years ago. That very expensive merchandise (About $500) had almost no packing material or thought placed in its shipping. The shipping was included in the price. What you see below is relatively inexpensive ($11) but I was charged $15 shipping and handling. It's obvious they put some thought, time, and packing material into their packaging solution. The glass was in bubble wrap inside a tight box, and then placed in another box with Styrofoam slats all around, and then placed in another larger box with additional paper packaging.

Package Arrival - February 14, 2011
Package Arrival - February 14, 2011

I don't know that this is a solution. It just killed me that the $11 item had $15 worth of shipping and handling. They used Fedex Ground and the order took two weeks from order placement to delivery. I had a client tell me once that he hates paying freight. He claimed it as a matter of principle but it really wasn't. He dealt mostly with people who didn't trust him (I wonder why). They always wanted to see his invoices because they didn't believe him and they wouldn't pay freight unless they, themselves, requested rush delivery. See, he was a guy who wasted a lot of time trying to find a better price, dropped the ball a lot, and always had his back to the wall on his deadlines. He'd end up having to order things overnight ... and paying freight that he couldn't pass along. Know anyone like that?

Back to the package pictured above, I looked high and low for a better price and that's probably because the client above rubbed off on me a little. Some merchants had lower shipping but when you added it to their price for the item, it was still higher than the $26 total. It got to CrabAppleLane unscathed, though, so there's that. Note to Rob: Be more careful next time, dumba$$.

Today's QOTD and BOTD are both about Jerry Richardson, owner of the NFL's Carolina Panthers, who took a condescending tone with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees in a recent negotiation meeting and it is more than a little mystifying to me. He questioned their intelligence, particularly Peyton's. Dumb, dumb, and dumb some more. Those guys are two of the sharpest tools in the shed. Richardson comes off like a bitter, miserly, old man and the QOTD mirrors my sentiments exactly. He's not winning any points with players or fans. The NFL needs to get him out of the room. Probably naive on my part but I'm assuming they actually do want a deal and that they're not trying to break the union.

Speaking of romantic, today's QOTD is from Ohio native Lafcadio Hearn writing about New Orleans in 1879.

Quote of the Day

Times are not good here. The city is crumbling into ashes. It has been buried under a lava flood of taxes and frauds and maladministrations so that it has become only a study for archaeologists. Its condition is so bad that when I write about it, as I intend to do soon, nobody will believe I am telling the truth. But it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes, than to own the whole state of Ohio.

Dear New Orleans Food & Spirits,

One of the specials on your chalkboard last night was Stuffed Pork Chop with Pasta Lafayette. Would you please add that to your regular menu? I would most definitely order it again. It was excellent.

Thanks,
Rob

Speaking of pork chops, it mystifies me why more non-Chinese restaurants don't serve them. Good pork chops are not expensive, they're not hard to find, and they're not particularly difficult to prepare. For instance, New Orleans Food & Spirits has several dishes that include chicken of some sort, steak, catfish, shrimp, and oysters. Why not a few dishes that include pork? Are Chinese Restaurants the only ones that get it? See QOTD.

I offer three from CrabAppleLane on this glorious Sunday. The first is of the Rufous Hummingbird that has been wintering here. We named him Roofie but that was before I decided he was a male. He is quite unlike the Buff-Bellied Hummingbird that wintered here a couple of years ago and nothing at all like the Ruby-Throated CrabAppleLane flock. He is much quieter, shyer, and not nearly as hungry. He doesn't stay around the feeder for long. The second one is just something I took so I can compare later. I usually don't prune the crepe myrtles that extensively or severely. I'm curious to see how they react. The third is of last night's sunset.

Birthdays and other Saturday Stuff

[Abraham Lincoln, U.S. President. Seated portrait, holding glasses and newspaper, Aug. 9, 1863] (LOC)Happy Birthday, Mr President. Wonder what he would think of the pennies, the $5 bills, the tunnel, the memorial, and Thanksgiving Day as we celebrate it now. Wonder what he would think of government, presidential campaigns, and the careful, stiff debates that current presidential candidates have. Wonder what he would think about all the fuss we make over some of the speeches he made. What a legacy.

Time to turn to baseball. LSU opens their baseball season this Friday night against Wake Forest. The Tigers are currently ranked 15th in one poll and 22nd in another. They have some good players but they also have a lot of question marks, particularly on their pitching staff. I have tickets coming for one of the SEC games at Alex Box Stadium this season. Update: They were in today's mail. Really looking forward to that.

How they're approaching Valentine's Day in Saudi Arabia. The Haia or Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice are in complete charge. From one florist:

They also threaten that if we sell even one red rose or gift they will shut the shop down and get all the staff fired.

Aren't they special? I have a different idea about who should be shut down and all the staff fired but I'll be more tolerant. For the Haia from CrabAppleLane:

WTF, Oklahoma? -31º is more than a little ridiculous at your latitude. Specifically, your 32.5-degree latitude is a little too close to my 30.6-degree latitude.

I don't see a peaceful transition of power in Egypt. I don't see peaceful or transition. For what it's worth, I don't think there was a play to be made by anyone outside of Egypt. Mubarek doesn't want to leave. This is totally on Egypt to resolve now. We can publicly spout platitudes about democratic reforms, appeal to Mubarek's sense of decency and ask him to step down, and maybe pressure him by withholding aid, which hurts ordinary Egyptians much more than it does the filthy rich Mubarek, or he could be physically removed and just who is up for that?

The video below gave me a smile this morning. I had this 45 back in the day and I have this on a couple of old compilation CDs in my collection.

Not bad. Sounds like it got some post-performance enhancement, though. I usually don't like that but I'll forgive it on occasion. Originally wondered what took so long for the audience to recognize the song they were playing until the camera panned out into it. They're simply too young.

OK, one of the strangest things I've read in a while. Not much to the article but

Several women from England recently traveled to Philadelphia to receive butt-implant procedures in hotel rooms, court documents say.

Make your own jokes. I'm just amazed that people with the means to make the Trans-Atlantic flight didn't invest a little more of their time in thought. "I'm going to fly to America to have a medical procedure performed but not in one of their excellent hospitals or clinics. I'm going to have it done in one of their bargain hotels." Really?

Dualing residences

Today's QOTD is about the news that New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton has bought or is going to buy a house in a Dallas suburb. The news isn't going over well in New Orleans. Earlier reports had him commuting from Dallas to New Orleans. Current ones have him maintaining dual residences. At some point in the article, this statement appears:

I can't imagine Saints owner Tom Benson is too happy about that.

We can talk about Benson's dual residences some other time. What bothers most fans, including this one, is where he's moving. Payton enjoyed his time in Dallas and he likes the area. He eventually wants to retire there. He's made all of that abundantly clear and if he was moving to a suburb of Memphis or Chicago or Kansas City, I don't think anyone would be worried. We are. Here's why: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants him. There is no doubt about that. Jerry Jones and Tom Benson are both billionaires. Jones will not offer Payton anything Benson couldn't match. However, he could quite possibly offer something Benson won't match and Sean could lose his mind just long enough to take it.

Congratulations
to the
Green Bay Packers

It was a fun game. The difference was the turnovers. The Steelers had them, the Pack didn't. I, for one, am happy that the Super Bowls are turning into exciting games. Remember 30-35 years of super duds? This is a great development. Aaron Rodgers really throws darts. If his receivers ever learn how to handle them ... :)

Thinking this morning that a Saints-Packers showdown at Lambeau would make a perfect NFL Kickoff Classic next season.

Where on Earth did this come from? I know they're friends but I just can't imagine why Sean Payton would want to work with Jerry Jones looking over his shoulder. He has no one looking over his shoulder in New Orleans. Which situation is better? Besides, he's 100 feet tall in New Orleans. He'd be just another ship passing through in Dallas. Still, the Saints felt the need to make a statement. That concerns me.

About today's QOTD: Please don't start calling him that. Please.

More complaints about the host. The game was undoubtedly a moneymaker. The attendance figures and the prices they were charging had to make it so. They'll learn from this and do better next time. Too bad for those fans, though. Geez.

Very surprised that Steeler fans outnumbered Pack fans by so much. I thought the Packers had a better following. Steeler fans were surely louder.

Finally, I hope the players and owners can figure out a way in the next three weeks to divvy up the megatons of cash that flow into their coffers. In this difficult economy, the money all of you guys are making is almost obscene. Your problems are trivial. Work it out.

One thing is certain about Super Bowl XLV. It will be at the top of the list of Super Bowls that had logistical nightmares. I think they even topped the one held in Pontiac at the SilverDome, where most of the ticket holders had to commute an hour to the stadium. Not to brag much but New Orleans is still, by far, the best city to host the Super Bowl. The SuperDome, the hotels, the great restaurants, the French Quarter, and the New Orleans night life are all within walking distance or a 10-minute cab ride from each other. It's a no-brainer. It should be held here every four or five years. A great time for all is guaranteed. One more thing.

CrabAppleLane Super Bowl Prediction

Speaking of Super Sunday

Got plans for tomorrow? The game figures to be fun. Both teams play decent defense. I think they're both vulnerable to the pass, though, and both teams throw the ball around pretty good. I expect a shootout. I'll be watching at home ... pulling for the Packers because they're NFC and because I like Aaron Rodgers.

I'd like to mention once again how idiotic it is to have one of the world's biggest events in a place where the weather can have a direct impact. The Super Bowl is the most important NFL game of the season. It is a week-long extravaganza. This week's weather and the host city's inability to cope with it will only affect the week's extra-curricular activities. The game, itself, will be played inside at JerryWorld although the weather, traffic, and security will undoubtedly make for some late arrivals and a few no-shows. In two years, the NFL is risking the extra-curriculars AND the game. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I don't envy the workers at my local Papa John's this weekend. Papa John's is running specials all weekend and they're also the "Official Pizza Sponsor of the Super Bowl". Pizza is always a favorite but it's a big favorite on Super Sunday. If last night's activity is any indication, it's going to be a whale of a weekend for them. The store I go to is always busy but I've never seen anything like what I saw last night. They were rolling. A 30-second spot for this year's Super Bowl broadcast goes for about $3 million. My order was $20. Most were larger than that last night. At $20, Papa John's needs to make 150k orders to make $3 million. At least 50 orders left or were picked up in the 10 minutes I was there. No need to worry about how they're going to pay for their sponsorship.

I can offer no commentary today on The Devil's Rejects. It was on the other night but I didn't watch it. Something caught my eye, though. The Devil's Rejects was written and directed by Rob Zombie and stars Sheri Moon Zombie. A movie called The Devil's Rejects written, directed by, and starring Zombies??? I've never seen the movie and this type of film is not really my cup of tea but I think that's just awesome. Rob Zombie is a very capable film maker and he has found a niche in horror flicks. Louisiana State workers have a day off today due to the possibility of snow. That's not something that comes up here very often. There is ice on our deck this morning and it is very cold but no snow yet. Maybe later. Will be a fun drive to work this morning.

About today's QOTD: Not a lot of detail in Saudi articles about Saudis. That quote is the whole article. Wonder what "regional developments" they could be referring to. By "strengthening bilateral relations", I think they mean "How do we keep this from happening to us?"

Happy Birthday to The Coalition.

There was a time that I could leave work, go straight to a concert, wait in line to get in, wait for the concert to start, knock back more than a few alcoholic beverages, get home at a ridiculous hour, and then get up and go to work the next day. That's what I'd have to do Tuesday to see a show I'd like to see. Even though the tickets are very reasonable, I won't even consider it. Must be older than I thought.

I envy the commitment and lack of clutter. A "Zero Waste" home sounds like a whole lot of work to me and even more inconvenience. Patsy and I are both clutterbugs. Our house looks nothing like theirs ... even on our good days.

Bingo. Love the comments. I find the one by WhitesCreek at 7:31AM to be hysterical. Spends the first paragraph debunking some ridiculousness and then spends the second paragraph promoting his own ridiculousness. Excellent.

"It is almost comical to see the end timers come out again. Biblically prophesied Armageddon has been supposedly nigh upon us a couple of hundred times now. Most of the problems in the Middle East are resulting from decades of outside meddling and support for repressive regimes. Unfortunately it is these times of revolutionary change that are ripe for seeing one repressive regime collapse only to be replaced by another, as was the case in Iran. As Mr. Bennett astutely notes, this could well be the case in Egypt.

If America were not ruled by fascists, we could expect our motives to be pure and we would assist in setting up governments similar to what we saw take place in Japan and Germany after WWII. But we are and we won't."

Was a little more into football last year at this time but I held out until Thursday of Super Bowl week to start really getting amped up here on the blog. I was as excited as any Saints fan, though. I think I showed remarkable restraint. :)
