New DirecTV receiver installed. Sometimes, it goes smoothly. Then, there was today. Sometimes, tech support gives you some insight. Then, there was today. Sometimes, I truly need their help. Then, there was today. I knew this was something simple. Their troubleshooting protocols couldn't find it. I found it but I'm not entirely sure what I did because I did so many things. Normally, that would concern me. Then, there was today. I'm declaring victory.
Glad my friends in Joisey and Philly are OK today. Irene did considerable damage. If you're in that area and you want to start cleaning up, be very careful. If you hurt yourself with a chainsaw, some other power tool, or just manage to cut yourself on something, you may not have a clear path to an emergency room because trees are down in the roadway. Even if you can reach an emergency room, it may be without power, understaffed, and overwhelmed. I recommend you get the immediate debris out of your way and leave the rest of the job for another day or two until things settle down and return to normal. This procrastination advice is no charge to CrabAppleLane readers. Be safe.

Quote of the Day
If you can hear a piano fall
You can hear me coming down the hall
If I can just hear your pretty voice
I don't think I need to see at all
I don't think I need to see at all
The White Stripes, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
Blog of the day is here.
Quote from said blog: "Saw them at ID Fest on Jones Beach this last weekend, and this song was bonkers."
"Bonkers" is probably not a bad description but I don't mean it the way he does. -Rob

I hadn't thought about the "Gee, can I even make it to an ER" angle to trying power tool type clean up. That's some really good advice.
We were blocked in for almost two days after Katrina. I could go two miles one way, three miles another, but I would have needed a helicopter to get to the closest hospital.
Sound advice. I didn't even want to go out to check on the car until I was fairly sure a big tree branch wasn't going to fall on me.
That's actually good advice, too, Kate. After Katrina passed, there were a few feeder bands still coming through with some rain and the occasional gust of wind. I went outside to remove a branch that had landed on my truck. When I got to the truck, I heard a crack. I looked up and around in a panic because I couldn't figure out where it came from. A sizable tree top landed on the ground about 25 feet from me.
