One of my favorite subjects in both grammar school and high school was ... lunch. My favorite dish at both was shepherd's pie. Both schools made it with ground beef, mashed potatoes, and that wonderful, slightly burnt cheese. After I got out of high school, I wandered in the wilderness for a few years but finally found a girl who made shepherd's pie. I married her. I digress. On my last trip to Minneapolis, I ate shepherd's pie at an Irish Pub with my Mom and my cousin, Beth. It was quite a bit different from the shepherd's pie I grew up with. We had brunch yesterday at another Irish Pub, The Irish House in New Orleans. Once again, I had shepherd's pie. This was quite a bit more like what I had as a kid. It had the ground beef, mashed potatoes, and burnt cheese. The only real difference was this dish had peas and carrots. Still not sure if I've had a true shepherd's pie, which I assume is made with mutton. The quest continues ...
We then went and had dessert at Angelo Brocato's. That place is a New Orleans institution and we got there at just the right time. We went right up to the counter. The place really started to fill up after we sat down. I had eaten their products many times over the years. Their Italian Seed Cookies, Spumoni, and Cannolis are sold all over town but I had never actually eaten there. Will most certainly do so again. That was fun.
The BOTD has a picture that I love. The sidewalk tiles shown there should be preserved any way possible. I have never seen that before.
About today's QOTD: Larry Fitzgerald is a superstar in the NFL and he is starting to fill the leadership void on his team. He gave their star rookie a "DWI" the other day after he missed a third straight day of workouts. DWI in this case means "Don't want it". That rookie showed up the next day and hasn't missed a day since. I like Larry Fitzgerald.
52 days until football season ...
I offer two from the CrabAppleLane backyard. I should get to the yard this weekend and may still if the weather holds up. The garden is done for the year and I need to remove it. Not a good season for me for reasons unrelated to gardening. Will do better next year.

Quote of the Day
Before you know it, you’re going to look down and find gray hair in your beard. You’re going to be sore in parts that were never sore before. It changes that fast, and I never realized that before. So I need your best right now.
Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals
Blog of the day is here.
Quote from said blog: "It still has these lovely sidewalk tiles, proclaiming this particular door the “Ladies Entrance.” I’m not sure what that means, or why ladies needed their own entrance to the ice cream shoppe that used to be here, but I like the look of these tiles."

My gardening has been a bit of a disappointment this year too. Part of that has been bad timing and part bad weather. I should have gotten some work in today, but it's too darn hot. And tomorrow looks like triple digits. Maybe if I can get up early I'll get a couple of hours in tomorrow morning.
There was a lot of that, too. There were times this season when the weather was just downright inhospitable. My garden suffered from neglect this year more than anything else. My fault more than the weather's, though. :(
