CrabAppleLane Sunday - September 2, 2012 Issue

The CrabAppleLane yard is a mess. WST came out last night and removed the tree limb that was concerning me. They cut it down and left it on the ground for me to finish. Fair enough. That's project number 1 of 867 tasks to do at or around CrabAppleLane. It's not really that bad but I think I'll be in the yard the rest of the weekend. In all, we were lucky. Power is still out to a surprisingly large number of people in Hurricane Isaac's path. I know those guys are doing the best they can and they are better prepared than ever to deal with this sort of emergency but this situation seems peculiar. Isaac wasn't particularly strong. Some people have been without power since Tuesday night.

Good and short read about the differences in watching a hurricane and being in one.

The NFL season gets underway Wednesday night with the NFL Kickoff Classic. The Giants host the Cowboys. The defending champs record in this game is perfect and that streak figures to continue. The Giants are better than the Cowboys.

Missouri.jpgFinally got to see Battleship Friday night. It is CME, for sure, but not really good CME. The critics had it right. It's got lots of eye candy, though, and some neat special effects if you have HD. Doesn't save it from itself. It only has a passing similarity to the Hasbro game it's based on but the game is better. That said, it was delightful and quite moving to see The Mighty Mo again. That famous image of her (Left) firing her guns is one of my all-time faves. Click on it to enlarge. As ridiculous as the film is, it's still worth seeing. Patsy didn't care for it and I now owe her a few hundred more movies. I'll be watching chick flicks the rest of my life, I think. :)

I offer one that you are probably tired of seeing. Sorry for the glare.

The Saints take on RGIII and the Redskins next Sunday. It's going to be a fantastic atmosphere. Saints fans are mad at the NFL and the commissioner, in particular. They will take it out on visiting teams this season. Always a hostile environment for visitors, I think it will be even more so this season. Welcome to the NFL, RGIII.

3 days until football season ...

Quote of the Day

Some of the more than 200 pieces of World War I ammunition which emerged from a melting glacier on a Trentino mountain peak are seen, Aug. 31. Each piece weighs between 7-10 kilos, and the 85-100 mm caliber explosive devices were found at an altitude of 3,200 meters, when a once-perennial glacier on the Ago de Nardis peak partially melted due to a recent heat wave that reached into Italy's highest peaks.
MSNBC

Blog of the day is here.

Quote from said blog: "The city’s biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding. One person was reported killed, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew just to be sure."

It's good that they got that tree limb out of there. I understand how tempting it is to try to do something about those things, especially as one day goes on to the next and it's still there. Good on you for keeping your patience.

I'm interested in the power outages too. I remember looking at the radar when Katrina hit and there were a truly frightening number of tornado warnings aside from the given hurricane winds. It was obvious from up here that there was going to be widespread devastation and power outages for weeks. Isaac told a completely different story on radar.

As for football, I need to do some studying today, but one thing I do know is I hereby vow to be contrary and will never refer to Robert Griffin by anything but his given name. ;)

Heh...no, I just haven't paid much attention until this weekend. Give me a few minutes and I'll post a comment there.
