Had I not been totally basking in slackerdom.
Monday (March 7) aka Lundi Gras: Beautiful weather. Naturally, it was the day BEFORE Mardi Gras. Ran an errand at lunch and then bought two Wendy’s Bacon 99ers and a small chocolate Frosty and ate in the Trailhead Park. Had the place mostly to myself. Love that. One pic below, three more below the jump.

Covington, LA Trailhead Park - March 7, 2011
Tuesday (March 8) aka Mardi Gras: Hoped to get in some bicycling but the weather, so lovely the day before, had turned. It was raining off and on all day. Housebound. Mysterious water leak came back again for a third time but I'm pretty sure I know why and I think I can fix it. It's leaking right at the drain. I used the wrong kind of sealer a few days ago. I put some of the right kind on top of it but that wasn't the best idea. Will wait until it's dry, remove as much of what's there as I can, and start over. Showering downstairs for a few days again in the meantime. Back to the weather: Patsy had forwarded a Severe Weather Warning for our area that included thunderstorms and possible tornadoes. Was supposed to be through here at 5PM or so. It was running late.
Wednesday (March 9) aka Ash Wednesday: Woke up to severe thunderstorm and torrential rain. The severe weather we were warned about was here and we were totally unprepared for it. No extra water, no extra gasoline for the generator, no canned goods, too much refrigerated and frozen food, etc. Wait, those are hurricane preparations. We shouldn't have to prepare for thunderstorms. For what it's worth, said thunderstorm was impressive. Shook the house. Was thinking it normally takes much less than this to knock out our power. That thought cost me. Yep, it's my fault that the sub-station that our power comes from sustained damage. Was told it will be down a few hours or all day. It was 6:15AM. Our power company, Washington St. Tammany Electric Cooperative, suggested we get a generator if we have special power needs. We really don't but the food in both the refrigerator and the freezer will go bad in a day or less ... even if we don't open them. We found that out in the aftermath of Katrina. Broke out the generator at about 10:30am, got it started, and alternated one-hour turns between the freezer and the refrigerator. Changed the oil after the third turn and made a total mess of that. This generator will only operate 110 outlets. Only one thing here needs more than that; the water pump. No showers for us. We had whatever water was in the tank, whatever water was in the water heater, and whatever water was in the pipes. If we were just waking up and knew everything was full, maybe. We had run the dishwasher, made coffee, and started our morning routines, which included rinsing things. Take a chance there's enough water left for a shower or hope you don't have soap in your eyes when it runs out? Not for me. We need a bigger generator. They're expensive, though. Doubt I can find one that Patsy can start anyway. :) The thing about gasoline-powered generators: You will get sick of smelling the fumes. Lots of Katrina memories came back to the surface. Power came back on at 3:10PM. Day lost.

Saw our first ruby-throated hummingbird, though. At least, I think he was. His throat appeared dark instead of brilliant red but that could have been because of the angle I was in relation to him or the angle he was in relation to the sun. Rescind day lost remark.

Thursday (March 10): For some really cool photography, how cool can 3D color images from the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire be? Would love to see those in 3D.
Friday (March 11): Japan hit by huge earthquake and tsunami. In much less serious news, it's the last day of NFL-NFLPA negotiations unless they agree to another extension. And one more thing: I had a unexpected visitor this morning and I'm not sure what to make of it. See image below:

Didn't know we had these in Bush, LA, and I don't know if it's a good thing but I don't know how much harm one can do ... if there's only one, that is.
About today's QOTD: Remember the Congressman who accepted a bribe and then said he did so because he was conducting his own investigation? I think Newt topped it. His love of country contributed to his infidelity. Note that he cheated on his second wife with his third wife. We could end up with a pair of adulterers in the White House. As a nephew once said, "Boss Hoss Awesome". Too bad the gods of late night comedy won't allow it. I don't see how that campaign ever gets off the ground.
