Mars

Mars is making a very close approach to Earth in the coming days leading up to and including the Labor Day weekend. I'm hoping for good weather for this event. The moon will not be a problem and Mars, always a naked eye object, will be noticeably brighter than ever. With a telescope of even moderate size, the polar caps should be clearly visible as well. I plan to dust off my moderately-sized telescope and go out into the night on many of those nights. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, folks. Don't let it get by you. Join me if you like.

When is that going to be? Aaron's teacher this year is an astronomy buff. I am happy about that. Aaron scored very high in science on his leap test months ago. He got a hundred percent in earth science. I would love for him to see polar ice caps on Mars.

All of next week and through the Labor Day weekend are prime viewing nights. Mars is rising in the southeast and is well-placed for observation from about 10PM on.
