The girlfriends took Joan out on Tuesday night for dinner to celebrate her birthday. No cake this year, she's busy training for a marathon in January. She started training with her friend who was planning on running the Rock & Roll Marathon in Phoenix and eventually she agreed to run it with her. I get tired just listening to her training schedule!
Anyway, Happy Birthday O Young One!

Wait. Did you say Joan is going to Phoenix to run a marathon? That is just wonderful. Tell her I'm proud to be related to her. I think she might be the first in our big extended family. If not the first, will the real first please stand up?
Happy, Happy, Joan. What are the chances she's going to see this?
Chances are actually pretty good since she peeks in on the blog periodically. I'll see what I can do to nudge her into posting an entry or at least a comment.
Yes, Rob. I'm here. Laura is just a bit more extroverted than me. Never liked to stand out in a crowd myself (unless I'm in full clown make-up).
And yes, Aunt Ginnie, I am training for a marathon, but didn't one of your sons-in-law just compete in a triathalon? THAT is an incredible feat.
Welcome aboard, Joan. Drop in any time. And Happy Birthday.
My husband, Joey, competed in his 2nd triathalon recently. But I think it's called a mini-triathalon. It's about a 1 mile swim, 20 mile bike, and 4 mile run. He finished, and that's the most important thing, but he did not make great time because he didn't train at all. Even if I trained, I probably wouldn't make very good time! I'm not much for biking, swimming, or running! I love going to the races, though. There's so much energy and excitement. Good luck, Joan, and let us know how you do!
Happy Birthday, Joan! Good luck on running in the marathon. For the past six years I've been walking two miles on a treadmill before going to work each morning and sometimes I jog for a little while - I'm up to about 2 sustained minutes now and then I give up and start walking. I cannot imagine running that much. My goal is 5 minutes! Kellie ran a half marathon in hilly Atlanta last Thanksgiving. It was her first time and she made very good time. I think it was just over two hours. I was very impressed.
Happy belated birthday greetings, Joan. Nice to see you comment too.
I ran a 10K and a 5K once back in 1988. Y'all didn't hear about blonde lightning? Okay, so I didn't win those times, but I did pretty much come in first of the middle bunch. I wish I could get the gumption to run again. I need some good shoes.
Okay. What would it take for us to hear from Mike Tompkins? A bribe of some sorts? A threat? A promise of good luck? We know about Beth and we know about Laura, and now after two years, we know about Joan. If only we could know about Mike, life would be good.
Yea Mike. Come on Mike. Let's go Mike.
That's enough.
I just thought of something as I re-read these comments. Regarding Sue and her walking: you may be interested in learning that Sue's WALK is a good bit faster than most people's JOG. Daddy used to say she was the only one who could keep up with him in walking through the Mall, in and out of all the stores, when she was little.
I'm working on Mike...
Joan's son Bill (just turned 21 on the 3rd) is also a runner. He'll be out of the Army at the end of May, 2006. I'm sure he's got his sights on a marathon also. My Brian has also been running about 25-30 miles per week also. Wrestling season has begun and it helps his endurance.
