The Terminal

We watched The Terminal last night. This is Tom Hanks at his best. He’s believable throughout the film even though the situations are not particularly believable. The movie is a bit too long but it has quite a few fun moments. Hanks is in just about every scene and that may be the only reason to watch it. This is a film where I was rooting for the happy ending but I suppose the bittersweet one it delivered was fair, too. I have something to say about one moment that I’ll put in the extended entry for those who haven’t see the film but want to. I surely recommend seeing it.

Viktor builds an elaborate fountain for Amelia, shows it to her, and explains why he wants to get to New York. He won her over with that and it is easily the sweetest moment in the film. I wanted to see that fountain work. I think it should have. If you've seen the film, what do you think? Please try to use language that won't spoil the moment for those who haven't seen the film.

I think Green Mile is Tom Hanks best movie. I haven't seen terminal yet..... it is in my list of movies from Netflix.

Uncle Robby,

I saw this movie about a year ago and was surprised at how good it was. I don't think it did all that well in the theatres. Anyway, when I was at the airport in France, we met a guy who said the movie was a true story and that Tom Hanks' character was still stranded...at the airport we were at! I think I remember reading at the end that it was a true story but cannot remember the specifics. Do you remember what it said or if it was even true?

I had no idea it was based on a true story, Stephen. That kind of snafu is much more believable to me in a European airport setting. No way that could go on here for nine months without some action reporter getting involved.

About Tom Hanks: I think I have liked all the movies I have seen him in, but my favorite is an old one called, "The Money Pit," with Shelley Long. There is a scene in that movie where a bathtub crashes through to the first floor and Tom Hanks leans over to see it and then starts laughing hysterically. I took Angela and Christina and some of their friends to that movie and they sat in the front and I sat way in the back, and I laughed so hard and so out-of-control that they heard me, turned around and looked at me, and were embarrassed. Whoever heard of being embarrassed by a mother?

The Money Pit didn't do a thing for me and I know the exact moment you're talking about. Your telling of it was funnier to me than my memory of it.

I love that scene in the Money Pit! Also, the scene when he gets stuck in the floor and is singing to himself the name song. I remember you laughing, Mom, but not being all that embarrassed, just surprised that the scene struck you so funny.

Here we go again with how much I love Tom Hanks. I loved him in "Castaway". I haven't seen all of his movies - "Bonfire of the Vanities" nor "Terminal", but he is awesome in everything I have seen. I also liked him in "Joe vs. the Volcano". I may be the only one who ever liked that movie.

I liked Joe V better than The Money Pit or Castaway.
