Christina and I separately watched a movie called "Broken Flowers" last week. I was anxious for her to watch it so I could get her impression of the movie and I was thankful that it was exactly the same as mine. How about some of you other people giving it a review? Okay, I guess nobody will, so I'll go ahead and tell you what you're missing.
We thought it was a typical dopey Bill Murray movie, very much like that other dopey one from last year that give him an Oscar, no less! The critics say he is the master of the world-weary, burned out expression of a fellow who has seen it all and is unimpressed. I disagree. He is a master of the stupid look, staring at the camera with nothing on his face. I think that's his own look, one he was born with, representing who he is as a person, and not acting at all. Anyway, the story line should have been interesting but along the way, someone forgot what it was, and the ending of it was most peculiar and totally unsatisfying.
Now. Does that intrigue you? Don't you wish to see it? Go ahead, and then tell me if you disagree. I dare you!
Everyone here is well. No flu. Elizabeth's Polina was four years old last weekend. And this month we have Matthew's 11th, Robbie's 49th, Janine's 46th, and Kevin's 51st. All in a row -- 14, 16, 17, & 18. I still have my root ball to be ground up and then my fence to be replaced after that, but I think that work is still a month, maybe more, off. Also, regarding that root ball, I was told that they just grind it down; they don't carry it away. I was shocked at that. What will I do with a ton of sawdust? Get out my shovel, you say? Not likely. I made an appointment this morning to have my taxes done. I told the lady I wasn't in a hurry and she replied, "good thing you're not; I've got a 2:45 p.m. Saturday, March 4." Last year I had to pay and I was told to increase my deduction. I didn't fill out the form till August and then didn't mail it in till October, so there's only two months where I had more money being taken out. Oh well. Next year I should do all right. Okay. This is it. I have to go to the library. They are back to opening at 10 a.m. but still close at 5 p.m. rather than 8 p.m. One of the many problems here is that people who used to do the work haven't returned and maybe will never return. Your turn.

I've seen it. Thoroughly forgettable. Lost in Translation was slightly better but not much. I could never sit through either, again. Murray was OK in Stripes and Groundhog Day but that's about all. I'm not his biggest fan, either.
Mama, what do you have against Bill Murray as a person? I could understand not liking his work, but what makes you think he is stupid? Have you seen an interview with him coming off looking dopey? I think he is okay but haven't like a lot of his work. I often am surprised that some of the people I really like in the movies come off looking so crass or stupid during interviews. Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds come to mind.
I have to say I am a Bill Murray fan and liked Lost in Translation. Hated Groundhog Day though, but that’s because I don’t believe Andie McDowell should act. Actually, I do want to see Broken Flowers on the recommendation of my hairdresser, so I will give my review after I get around to seeing it. Have my hands full these days, so you may have to wait a couple of months for my review.
Eric really liked him in Kingpin? Or is that Rushmore? I always get those movies mixed up. I'm sure you movie buffs will be able to set me straight.
Okay, Kingpin... hilarious! Rushmore is the movie Mary is referencing and I didn't get that one either. Bill Murray doesn't come off as stupid, but he does lack social skills and public speaking etiquette. He's just not entertaining. I loved Meatballs though!
Elizbeth -- Yes, I have seen him on David Letterman and on Jay Leno, usually touting a movie, but sometimes just visiting. The trouble with him is the same as the trouble with Robin Williams, Steve Allen, Chris Rock, and other so-called comedians -- they all believe they have to be funny at all times and they look foolish with their foolishness. Why not just have a normal conversation with the host? Talk about their everyday lives and so on. Too boring? Well, I turn them off when they start going ballistic to get a laugh.
I'm not a Bill Murray fan and don't plan to see either of those movies. I think he did too many drugs while on SNL in the 70-80's :). Carol
He still makes me laugh in "Stripes". I saw him actually cry on the Letterman show while he was talking about his six sons. I have also seen him talk about his Mother on the DL show. He gave her the money to take a cruise to Ireland, so he isn't all foolishness. I haven't seen the last two movies, nor "Rushmore", and am not interested in this one you are reviewing either. In fact, I am not sure there are any movies that can get me to a theater anymore. I might see one for my birthday if anything good is playing. Romantic comedy, or just plain old comedy is what I go for. Thrillers and anything described as "poignant" do not attract me.
I seem to have touched a nerve in my comments about Bill Murray. I think what I said was he had a stupid look, not that he was a stupid man. And that he always tried (and failed) to be funny when he was a guest on a talk show. Okay. I missed the tears talking about his six sons and I missed the show about sending his mother to Ireland. I did hear him talking about his brothers and how close he was to all of them and what good times they had together, then and now. So no, I have nothing against him exactly -- just his movies. I'm sure he's a perfectly fine human being. As am I.
I know that my taste in movies is not the same as everyone else's. Angela looked at me and even probably asked me "what the heck?" because of my liking "Groundhog's Day". The acting in a movie is usually secondary to the story. Yes, I think Andie McDowall is a little flat, but I loved that story. Humor can make a point like no other medium. If you are crabby and miserable, there are actions one can take to make it better.
Did anyone see "Wedding Crashers"? It's on PPV and I have a coupon somewhere for a free movie.
My taste is closer to yours, Janine. I also liked Groundhog Day. Wedding Crashers had something going but it got kind of ridiculous. I love Vince Vaughn.
I have never seen an interview with Bill Murray. I find it very interesting that he has 6 sons. What about daughters? Do they all have the same mother? I loved Meatballs and Groundhog Day, never saw the other ones discussed--hated him in that STUPID golf movie when he was the groundskeeper. I know so many guys who loved that stupid, not funny movie. That being said, I have seen several movies with Andie McDowall and she was crummy in all of them.(Green Card....Sex, Lies, Videotape....4 weddings and a funeral.....)
Yes, Mama, we all think you are a fine person.
