After

Ash Wednesday. Jimmy (Elizabeth's son) is showering, getting ready to go to work at Joey's tuxedo shop. Lars (Katie's son) also worked there this weekend, and stayed with me, but he left last night because he had two tests today that he didn't want to miss. Jim had permission from his folks to cut school today. This is usually a three-day holiday for them, but on account of Katrina, they decided on just Monday and Tuesday. Jackson and Jacob had to go back to school today, but Christina's public school has the day off. I haven't talked to her this morning, but I bet she's crying because they had to leave her home alone.

Saturday night, Jackson and Jacob stayed overnight while Christina and Phillip went to the Endymion ball. For awhile it was pretty loud in my usually very quiet house because Lars is an expert at revving up those little boys, and they just can't get enough of it. Sunday night it was Angela and Joey's turn to trip the light fantastic at the Bacchus ball. The other grandma had the Samuel duty overnight; I'm not sure if that was the first time or not, but I know they loved having him. He's a very easy baby to be around.

After the parades yesterday, Janine and Julia and Aaron stopped in for a visit. They had spent the day on St. Charles Avenue with Angela and Christina and their group watching Zulu, Rex, and the two truckparades, Elks and Crescent City. The parade route was shortened considerably because of police protection concerns. Since the storm, a number of police have left the force, plus there is supposedly no money to pay overtime. Anyway, I had fixed a pot of red beans for the boys and fortunately there was more than enough for everyone.

A lovely evening and a really nice ending to the extended weekend. And now, on to Lent.

P.S. I forgot to mention that Elizabeth and the others in her family visited Scott's parents in central Florida this past long weekend. And Katie and some friends took a surprise, spur-of-the-moment trip to Las Vegas. Both will return this evening.

Would love to have crawfish sometime this Lent but at the prices they're at now, it isn't likely. Maybe after Easter. Last price I saw was $3 per pound. I'll go triple digits for them but that first digit will have to be a 1.

Mom, you got that a little backwards. Joey, Katie, Kevin, and I went to Endymion on Sat. night and Christina and Phil went to Bacchus on Sunday night. And yes, it was Samuel's first sleep-over, and he did great!

And I am READY for some crawfish! I didn't have any last year because I was nursing my little Samuel and didn't think the spices would do well with him. No more nursing now so I am ready for crawfish. Bring on the spices!

I want some crawfish!

Crayfish.

Would that correction be by Grandma or my mother? And I only spelled it out everyone else did!

It was your Grandma, Brianne. Both spellings are correct. Angela and I prefer the Louisiana spelling. Mom prefers the Minnesota version. In Minnesota, they use their crayfish to catch northern pike. In Louisiana, we think our crawfish tastes better than that northern pike.

I'm really sorry about this. It's just that, really, three crawfish in one setting was too much for me. I had to let people know it is correctly spelled with a "y" in spite of an assertion that both spellings are correct. I don't think so.

But, Brianne, my beautiful little girl, I did not mean to hurt your feelings and I know you only did what you did because others did it before you. I was also letting the others know about the Y. The Y. The Y.

I suppose that's the last word then. It just doesn't seem right to me, but I yield.

Those beans may have been the best I've ever had, Mother. It was so much fun to have tea with you and hang with Lars and Jimmy too. They are very nice young men and their cousins Julia and Aaron adore them.

Mama, when I was a senior in high school you let me skip school on Senior Skip Out Day! So, when I let Jimbo Do "cut" school on Wednesday, I can only say I was following your example! Thanks for keeping the big boy. He had a great time, even though I AM SURE HE MISSED HIS MOMMY TERRIBLY!!

Why would I let you skip out when I never let anyone else do that? I suppose now everyone will jump in and tell me, nuh unh, you let me skip out . . . Oh well.

I wasn't making a judgment on Jimmy's day off, just stating a fact. And you're welcome. He and Lars were good company and easy to be around and I know they both missed their mommies terribly.
