Rob's Idea

Something I said yesterday prompted Robbie's suggestion that I enter some old diary conversations. Well, I looked around and found a few of them. I didn't launch an all-out search, but someday I will because I should have quite a few more years somewhere. And I have to tell you, they aren't very interesting for the most part, so don't look for this segment very often.

On this day (or thereabouts):
03-09-49 Got two tubes of Revlon lipstick.
03-06-50 Catherine got ring.
03-08-59 Saw Globe Const. Co. houses for$13,200 and $14,200. Very nice.
03-08-60 Mixed 1/2 tblsp. rice cereal with banana flakes for Janine. She was an angel all day.
03-08-61 Took Sue to ear specialist. Another infection--$6.39 med.
03-09-85 Mrs. F. had minor accident.
03-05-87 Bought new weed eater. $25.00.
03-05-88 First grass cutting.
03-04-89 Rummel Prom for Christina. Went in limousine.
03-17-90 Girls' junior prom. Served chicken fettucini.

I led a not-much-going-on sort of life. Either that, or I played my hand very close to the vest. Sincere apologies if any of you had high hopes of a good read!!

Aunt Ginnie, I just love your comments and your stories keep them coming!!!
Did you always keep a diary?

I didn't know you were keeping a diary that recently! I remember that chicken fettucini dinner. It was St. Patrick's Day and you went all out with the green decorations, and I think the pasta was even green. I was very impressed with your hostessing abilities!

I did the math. I was 17 days old when you fed me cereal and fruit. Oh my goodness, no wonder I was an angel. My body was too busy trying to process that to produce any incessant waa-waa-ing.

I am still angelic when I get a good meal. Heaven is fried potatoes and onions, smothered with extra sharp cheddar.

And it was a good idea, too. I love reading even the mundane stuff from long ago. The blog is not much more than an online diary. What ring did Aunt Catherine get?

I presume the ring was an engagement ring, wedding in Sept and Gary arrived 9months later in late May 1951. It's always interesting to hear how much things cost in years past, houses, prescriptions, gas and the like.

Fun comments! Do you still keep a diary? I think it would be fun/good to keep an event diary, but not one of feelings....I'm too paranoid! Carol

I never put feelings down either, Carol. Just odds and ends of what happened that day. I used a Hallmark date book and hung it on my bedroom door. It never occurred to me that anyone would read it and if they did, what did they learn? Some really dopey stuff is what! Yes, Nancy, the ring was your mom's engagement ring. The banana flakes were the remedy for diarrhea back then, Janine. When you were three weeks old and my folks were visiting, you had a terrible case of big blisters on your diaper area. My mother told me to leave you undiapered, which I did, and I think the doctor prescribed an ointment too. Until it healed, though, you cried incessantly and we all felt really sorry for you (as we pinched your nose). I don't keep a diary anymore and I'm always sorry I don't. There are so many things to remember in a year or two or thirteen, and you don't have a clue if it's not written down. I do occasionally save copies of letters and they provide a little history from time to time. My mother always kept a five-year diary and they were fun to read. What I'm saying, people, is jot things down so you'll have a history of your life.

One more thing. The $14,200 house was the one we bought and where I still live. The house next door to me was the $13,200 house and if you'll look on our block, they are more common. There's only one other $14,200 house. $1,000 more or less was a lot of money back then, but I've never regretted going all the way!! Unlike today, six-digit houses were beyond our imagination .

Mama,
I must have missed the other entries for your diary. I saved all of your letters that you wrote to me when I was in college. They are filled with information about what was going on in your life from 1982-1986. Very newsy. Also, Sue has kept at least some of your letters from when she was in England or in Colorado. I remember being unpleasantly surprised that I wasn't your ONLY Dolly Dimple.
