If you’ve been to the French Quarter in New Orleans, you recognize this. Lucky Dogs are a New Orleans Institution. If you’ve had a few too many Hurricanes, they’re also appropriate penance. I haven’t had one in many years and I certainly wasn’t going to get one yesterday with all of the wonderful food all around us. This guy wasn’t doing much business, either, but I know business for him picks up when the restaurants start closing while the bars are still open. I don’t know what it is about drinking too much that makes you yearn for food that is sure to mix with the alcohol in your system and tear your stomach up. Lucky Dogs were one of my faves when I used to do that along with Krystal hamburgers (White Castle hamburgers elsewhere) and Takee Outee Shish Kabobs (Another New Orleans Institution but I’m not sure they’re still around). I’m not saying any of this food is bad because it’s not. It’s just that Pepto-Bismol, it aint.
One of the groups we saw yesterday at the French Quarter Festival was the Washboard Chaz Blues Trio (Adobe Acrobat Reader required). The stage was right on the river. I lost my presence of mind and didn’t think to take a picture. Hearing old time Mississippi Delta Blues on the Mississippi River is just awesome. I’m going to have to make an effort to see them again.

Another great entry on the French Quarter Fest. Are you going another day? Katie and Kevin and Christina and Phillip are going tomorrow. Be on the lookout if you're down there. Kevin told me they were going to hear the Radiators. (?) Daddy and I went to one of the first, many years ago, and it wasn't nearly as organized as it is today, and we chose not to go again. I wish my knees were more agreeable -- I used to love strolling in the French Quarter.
On a different note, it just occurred to me that you've never mentioned your hen. Is she still with you?
We stopped quite a bit because it was nice enough and there were empty benches (Only on Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays are much more crowded). That's the ticket if you don't get around as well. No, we're done for this year. I got my souvenir shirt and Patsy got an apron.
Yes, the hen is still around. She was preening yesterday on my tailgate and I walked right up to her and could have pushed her off but I banged on my truck and scared her off, instead.
I love Lucky Dogs and just about every time I'm in the Quarter I get one. When Christina was pregnant with Jackson we were in town and Christina was having a late night urge for a good hot dog, instead of doing what was requested of me I tried to pass off a 7-11 hot dog for a Lucky Dog but that didn't go over very well!
I want to see the Radiators tomorrow but Christina isn't a fan, not sure if we have a plan I think we're just winging it.
Phil
Not a fan of the Radiators, either, but there will be a lot of other music down there. All within walking distance.
A late night Lucky Dog urge when you're not already down there? I think I'd do the 7-11 and take my lumps, too.
Joey and I are going to the fest today, just as soon as he gets back from Lafayette. My sister invited me to ride with them so I wouldn't be so late getting there, but I don't mind being late. I don't think I would last that long with all the walking and the heat and the no shade to be found atmosphere. Can't wait to eat some crepes though! Gonna try that other dish you mentioned too, Robbie.
Shade will be scarce if the crowd is as big as I expect it to be today.
I went to the FQ fest on Saturday with Julia and her friend, who isn't conditioned for walking. I found a parking spot on Barracks St. and hiked into Jackson square - staying on the shady side of the street. All those food booths there and the friend couldn't find anything to eat, so we went to Jax brewery where we found some chicken nuggets and fries. The girl had an attitude about the whole plate being microwaved - so it all went into the garbage. The only way to console her was to promise her a cappuccino (she's almost 11) at CC's which was near the car. She put 8 sugars in it and came to life for the long ride home. Yay for me. I was on a mission anyway, which was accomplished, so she didn't bother me. Next time, though...
It was such a nice day for a festival. There was a jazz band in front of the old Wildlife and Fisheries bldg. with a dense crowd eating it up. People were dancing out front, and there was this one guy who reminded me of Grandpa Ferrara and his fancy footwork. He was doing some kicks and jumps - not bad for approx. 75 years old.
