Ashley's Prom

Pretty as a Picture!.JPG
This past weekend was a very busy but fun weekend for us! Ashley went to the Junior/Senior Prom. She did not have a date, but a couple of her friends did and they all went as a group. She was on the "Class Cabinet/Prom Committee" and had to help with the planning of not only the dance and it's theme, but decorating for the Grand March as well. The Grand March was Saturday afternoon, then the dance was later that evening. She and her friends decided rather than going out to dinner they would have a progressive dinner. Pretty smart I thought, that way all the parents could get pictures and the kids didn't have to pay for dinner. They started at one of the boys' house for hors devours, then salad at another girls' house, main meal at her best friend Emily's house and dessert was at our house. They all looked so grown up dressed in their finery! Ashley had been looking forward to Prom for over a year as she toiled away on her dress. She started making it over a year ago. The original pattern was that of a Civil War ball gown. She modified it somewhat but the main design was still there. She made everything from the corsett and the hoop skirt to the petty coat and even the little roses that were tacked onto the skirt. (recessive genes I think~I know how to sew but don't like it) She worked so hard on it and I'm so happy for her that it turned out so well. She looked beautiful if I say so myself. The weather was beautiful and they all had a blast. We had 3 girls sleep over and they actually were so tired they were asleep by 2 a.m.! The next morning Ashley and Emily went "rafting" down the "crick" on blow up snow tubes. What fun, so old, yet still so young. It was quite the memorable weekend. I'm going to try to post some other pictures for you to paruse if you like. Carol

Beautiful young lady and dress.

I'm so impressed with her talent and originality! She looked beautiful!

Ohhhhh. Ashley. What a gorgeous girl. What a gorgeous gown. What a gorgeous tree. Everything looks just perfect. And it sounds like the entire evening was wonderful. We did the dinner-before-the-prom one year -- I can't remember which prom it was, but the girls' school was eager to prohibit the before-prom activities, maybe to prevent drinking? I can't really remember why. Anyway, the school asked parents to step up and although I had never been a volunteer for anything, for once I did, and it turned out to be really nice. There were eight couples and everyone seemed to enjoy being there. And I enjoyed seeing them enjoy being there.

Oh my goodness, Ashley. How talented you are. You've got your Mother's moxie - making your own dress, being on the planning committee, and the other many details you have to attend to. You look so beautful and radiant. Was this senior or junior prom?

That dress is BEAUTIFUL!!! She is the prettiest one up there on stage and with her friends. I hope she had fun!

Ashley, what a beautiful dress and you looked stunning! I am interested in more details of the dress. What was the fabric? How many buttons are on the back and are they decorative or are there loops for the buttons? When I saw the first picture, it reminded me of Cinderella's dress. Did you take sewing classes in school or are you self-taught? Do you plan to do something with fashion for a career one day? I cannot believe you made that dress yourself - you are very talented!

Ashley, the dress is beautiful. Are the pearls down the back actual buttons or decoration for a zipper? My wedding dress had the buttons and it took forever to get them all done. I am so pleased that y'all had nice weather to make it perfect for you. I love the idea of the progressive dinner. I wish Jimmy and his friends would do something like that. I think that sounds like more fun than going to a restaurant. Ashley, you look so very pretty.

Wow! How talented. I am more than impressed! What a feat. The progressive dinner sounds so fun.

Talented and beautiful! Wow!! :) You go girl!

Thank you for all the compliments. The dress was made out of dull satin and I used upwards of 20 buttons. The back closure was elastic loops/buttons.I have taken a couple classes at school, but they didn't teach me anything I didn't already know. So, I guess I'm self taught. In a perfect world I'd love to be able to design costumes for the rest of my life...we'll see how that turns out. It was my junior prom, so I have a lot to live up to for next year; I'm already starting to plan...
I had a surreal time at Prom. ~Ashley
