Memorial Day stories (very brief)

1949 -- Went to Excelsior Park with Billy Lasser.

1950 -- Duke, Dev, and Leo came over.

1957 -- Went to Clara's country home. Lovely day.

1958 -- Had worst haircut of my life at Chevy Chase.

1959 -- Had my shoes re-heeled; had Sam's heeled and soled.

1960 -- Gary is 9 years old today.

1961 -- Party at Columbia Heights (Minneapolis) for Club and their kids.

1985 -- Moschella Contracting gave estimate: $11,800. (The addition actually rounded out to around $16,000 before it was finished!)

1987 -- Barbecue at Katie's.

1988 -- Nothing doing. Bought a starfish. It died.

1989 -- Nothing doing. Sam worked.

1990 -- Saw "Search for Red October."

Now listen. I never promised exciting, did I?

Happy Birthday, Gary.

Oh, and who is Clara?

Boring, not really. Too bad there aren't more details, or maybe there are and you just didn't add them thinking they too were boring. And, just for the record, Gary's birthday is May 30th. Carol

You got a haircut and shoes heeled on Memorial Day? Now that you have had a bunch more haircuts, was that really the worse one in 1958?

I love hearing about stuff that happened! and NO it is not boring! I am a history nut. Thanks for putting stuff like this down.

Beth's comment.............Number 4000. WOW!!!!!!

OK. When's Gary's birthday and when's Jeff's?

Gary's is May 30 (when I wrote that he was 9, it was May 30, the original Memorial Day) and Jeff's is May 2. I was in Minnesota, showing off my new baby Robbie, when Jeff was born and they stopped in to show him off to my folks on their way home. My mother was still in a wheelchair from a deadly car accident in January. To come home from the hospital, Aunt Catherine had on HIGH HEELS, hose and girdle, also a skirt and blouse from pre-pregnancy, and looked like a million dollars.

About Gary's May 30th birth: we were at home, my parents and I, doing nothing and my mother noticed Uncle Dick driving up. When he came in, he looked at Mom and said, you have a grandson. And my mother said What? What do you mean? What? When? Where is Catherine? In the hospital? What? WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL? And so on and so forth. And something else that I think is funny about this first grandchild and I hope this doesn't ruffle any feathers, but my mother at first didn't care for the name. And for a few weeks after, while notifying friends and family by telephone about this precious new family member, she would say, "Well, ahh, his name is - ahem - ahh - ha ha ha - Gary! Like Gary Cooper, don't you know."

I won't tell my mom about the name thing :)

Good idea, Carol. Much more useful to keep it to yourself. :)
