Happy Memorial Day
Except for being extremely hot, it was a lovely day in New Orleans on the Mississippi River this afternoon. We decided to visit the Aquarium of the Americas today along with everyone else in the world. You’d have thought it was a holiday. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did in spite of the overwhelming crowd.

That’s Patsy’s sister on the right up high feeding fish and waving to the kids and her brother-in-law on the left down low doing the same. They're both volunteers. You pass through that tunnel as you enter the Aquarium of the Americas and the fish and turtles are all around you. We hadn’t been to the aquarium since the year it opened. It is truly a marvel right on the Mississippi River.

These guys and gals are the star attraction. They were made famous recently. They’re kept behind glass as you can tell.

We got to go inside because we knew two of the divers. :) These two turtles were rescues.

The plan was to walk from the Aquarium to the Riverwalk and get lunch but only two restaurants in the Riverwalk were open and they were wrapped up solid with people standing in line. We went somewhere else. We passed the fountain both ways and I stopped to get a picture. That’s the Cajun Queen in the background.

Michael's brother and sister-in-law gave us a family pass one year for Christmas. It was fun to go to now and then, always crowded. We always walked through the Riverwalk. Once, we took Corey with us (he was about 8 or 9 then) and we picnicked on the ferry. I was worried about how they kept the creatures alive during those crazy, hazy days post Katrina. I am glad to hear of the Aquarium still being operational. Such a neat place...
Plus, cool pictures, Robbie. How fun to see Bobette and Mark doing their thing.
Janine,
Only a handful of the creatures survived Katrina. The Aquarium lost power for an extended period. The otters and penguins and a few of the others that were sent elsehwere survived but I think most of the ones there now are new.
I remembered, as I looked at your excellent pictures, that I had promised to let you know where Dad's brick is. Dennis took a picture of it and wrote down the address, after methodically searching for it one afternoon. That was such a nice thing for him to do. I only went a few times, but Dad liked taking visitors to see it. I'm glad you had a good day. If you go again, let me know and I'll tell you where the brick is. Ha! Try me.
I asked the Information Desk and they didn't have the name. It might have been listed under Dennis's name but I couldn't remember his last name.
As a penguin lover I LOVED the pics of the penguins!
Thanks for sharing! ;o)
Robbie,
Great pictures. I was in the French Quarter on Memorial Day also with my Mom and Step-Father and his niece and nephew from New York. Surprised I didn't run into you. It was a great day to be in the quarter even if it was hot. Can't wait to go to the Aquarium - I alway enjoy it and am so glad that it is finally back. Thanks for the pictures.
"Surprised I didn't run into you."
It's a big place and it was very crowded, Barbara. :) We did the Aquarium, the Riverwalk, and the Jean Lafitte State Park Visitor Center (Highly recommended). If you were in the Jackson Square area, we wouldn't have run into each other.
