Yesterday was a happy day

for Brian. Yesterday was his 17th birthday. He got his driver's license yesterday morning and has been grinning ear to ear since then. He was not too eager to get his license and we had ended up going to a second driving company for his behind the wheel training. (Thanks Carol!) All of his friends have their licenses so what's the hurry? He's got a ride anywhere he wants with his friends or Paul and I. He borrowed my car last night just to drive around a little while without his parents telling him what to do in the passenger seat. He wasn't gone that long and the car returned dent free. Life is good.

Happy Birthday, Brian. Get used to your mom's and dad's white knuckles, their knees to the dashboard ,and the cool hisses while you drive. There's not much you can do about it.

Congratulations, Brian. I loved having a license. I was fifteen years old and only one other of my crowd had one. We reigned supreme, even though there was never a question that either of us would have use of a car. My father used his in his work and could not be without it. Plus he believed in his heart I was not competent, no matter what the State of Minnesota said. When I turned seventeen or maybe eighteen, he would let me drive the four blocks to the bakery for a loaf of bread and I was thrilled at that -- and drove home going around Lake Calhoun, putting an extra five miles on the four block journey. (In some ways that may have proved my incompetence.) I know you'll be a good driver and it sounds to me like your parents are encouraging and trustful of your abilities. Good for them. They are much more enlightened than I was when I had teen drivers.

Hooray for independent children~Congrats Brian (and Laura)

Congratulations, Brian. I can't imagine NOT wanting to drive. I was the last of my friends to get a driver's liscense and later to get a car. I pretty much had to push Jim to get his-he is several months older than most of his friends and was the first. He definitely feels like the big shot now. While he doesn't like to drive for me, he loves driving his friends around. Following in Jim's footsteps is Mary Catherine, who has already declared that she is not getting her liscense. I don't get it!
