This snake was ambling around my deck on Sunday and I couldn't kill it. I still have guilt feelings over asking someone to come to Synchronicity to get a harmless snake out last year, and he killed it. I didn't expect him to do that. I was hoping he would just put it outside. That chopped up snake smell was horrible and took all night to get out of my usually sweet-smelling store. This one has the potential to hurt us, but I still didn't feel right about killing it. Katie suggested I get the hose and blast it down the road, but I didn't want to do that either. It may be under my house, waiting to ambush me. Gee, I hope not. Oh well...

That looks like a moccasin, Janine. Give it a wide berth if you're not willing or able to kill it.
I hate snakes(even harmless garter snakes). I'm sorry to say if it is a posionous one it definitely would be on the kill list. We've had 2 5ft long rattle snakes up close to the house and they were quickly dispatched...too close to kids and pets. Take care.
Same here, Nancy. I've had to kill two copperheads. I have to kill the poisonous ones on the property.
The snake must DIE! I think that is definitely a moccassin. You have children and pets. As Sue would say, it doesn't deserve to live. You are crazy to leave it there!
If it becomes territorial, choosing my deck as it's territory, then I will probably kill it. I don't like to kill snakes for no reason. They are Gods creatures too.
I chided my brother-in-law for killing a racer that got exposed when he was stacking his winter wood. His grown son, visiting from Florida, wouldn't go near the woodpile at all when he thought he might encounter a snake in the pile. Joe was counting on Tony's visit for that reason - to help him stack his wood. Joe said they all must die, or at least, the ones around him do.
I look ahead when I walk out my door. Plus, I know Chip will kill the snake instead of the other way around. Lily sleeps inside and the cats won't be fooled. They'll hear it coming and run up a tree. Or on my new car. I will have to shoo them off. Darn pawprints on my roof and hood...
