Happy Valentine's Day

Got plans?

There are so many interesting tidbits about Valentine’s Day that I thought I might share a few. My favorite tidbit comes courtesy of Wikipedia:

In Slovenia, a proverb says that "St Valentine brings the keys of roots," so on February 14, plants and flowers start to grow. Valentine's Day has been celebrated as the day when the first works in the vineyards and on the fields commence. It is also said that birds propose to each other or marry on that day.

I think that last sentence a bit fanciful but who cares? It's harmless fancy and I like it. Another tidbit comes from The History Channel:

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Also a bit fanciful. When I was a kid, people used to route their Valentine cards by mail through Valentine, Nebraska so they’d have a Valentine postmark. I don’t remember how to do that and I’m not sure that it can even still be done.

They celebrate it a bit differently in Saudi Arabia. Had to include that because it contains a committee with my all-time favorite title: The Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Watch out for these guys and have a Happy Valentine’s Day. Have a red Rose on me

Red Rose

Those were interesting tidbits.

Michael brought me a dozen red roses yesterday. I like cut flowers. I thanked him for the gesture. That was very sweet of him. Then I told him that my preference is for longer-lasting cut flowers. One of the roses already wilted. The rest are kind of sad and probably won't last the whole day. I cut the stems and put that powder in the water. I hate to be unappreciative.

As for him, I have promised pralines.

My current employer used to hand out a single long-stemmed rose on St Valentine's Day to the ladies in the offices of our clients. When I say long-stemmed, I mean like 36 inches long. They were gorgeous and it was quite popular but rather expensive. We'd give out a few hundred. We can't get a decent quantity of them with any quality any more and the price has shot way up so we do something different now.

Our 19th wedding anniversary was yesterday. As a rule, we only exchange cards and go out for a nice dinner. Paul went to the Dr. on Monday and got antibiotics for the sinus infection he has been fighting. He started our cold/flu season out right around New Years. I got it the last week in January. Brian has had it but Danny has somehow managed to escape it. Paul was doing better but got another round of it. When I got home from work yesterday, I asked him what time we were going to dinner. He groaned, I took his temperature and decided on an I.O.U. for our anniversary dinner...

We had an 1 1/2 hour power outage last night. I ended up giving all 3 boys their Valentines and treats early to add an air of festiveness to our candlelit house. Brian groaned because he thinks he's too old to get a Valentine from his Mommy. You're never too old, right??

Happy Anniversary, Laura. I had two bouts with the crud this year, too.

No, you're never too old to get a Valentine from your Mommy! My two boys will receive them from me until the day I die. They'll always be my babies! As for now, neither one really knows what this is all about but Samuel loves his new book and the candy he got. Joey has worked until 1am the last two nights and tonight will probably be the same so we won't be going out to eat. It's Mardi Gras season, and thank goodness the fun will all be over next week!

Ohhh, Angela. This makes me sad. I have never been a Valentine person and I can't remember when or if I ever gave one to you. But I've done other nice things, haven't I?

On the same theme, I'm so impressed at Robbie's romantic streak, aren't you? He must have gotten that from Daddy. When we were dating, for the seven days before February 14th, I received a Valentine each day in the mail, professing undying love and devotion, some silly and some hearts and flowers. Wish I had saved them!

Janine,
Ashley and Nicole are doing a fund raiser and purchased roses. The florist gave a "care" instruction sheet and it says to cut the flowers each day, put in new water. Also, it said to sanitize the vase with bleach, not dish soap before adding water the first time. Also to keep cool and out of direct sunlight. So, maybe that'll help yours. Dan usually gives me (and the girls) roses, but I always tell him he doesn't need to as he's so sweet all the time. I usually make a nice dinner with a red velvet cake served on china for Valentine's day. Oh, and I usually get/make cards and a little gift for the girls. Ashley was s'pose to work tonight so we celebrated last night. But, she's got a bad cold and switched her shift, so she'll be celebrating by going to bed early. Carol

Dad always does Valentine's at our house. I already got my care package. It was sent home with my roommate Sunday. I opened the card then but I at least waited until today to open the Peachies! They are my favorite candy and I got two bags with some tic tacs too! I am going to have to watch them though, I have already seen my roommates eyeing them. Happy Valentine's Day!
