Janine and I had supper at Phil's Grill last night. She hadn't been yet and as soon as we walked in, Phillip said, "Where's Aaron and Julia and Michael?" She was sorry they weren't with her, but she was in the vicinity and couldn't pass it up. We started off with a basket of onion strings and fries. Delicious. Since the food is hand-made, it takes awhile, so the basket was empty in no time. This is not Burger King or MacDonald's! I had a burger with all the fixings, including cinnamon sugar bacon, and she had a vegetable burger with goat cheese (hmmm?) and all the rest. One of the best things about these burgers are the grilled onions which are done to perfection; they are hard to find elsewhere, as you probably know. My mother's burgers w/sauteed onions were the best and Phil's Grill are nearly as good. For dessert we had a mixed selection of fried brownies, fried apple beignets, and fried banana foster cheesecake. Sounds a little odd, I know, but they are bite-sized and just wonderful. When we arrived, it was early and we had our choice of tables. When we left, it was a full-house. And that's a good thing!
The day before, Jackson and Jacob stayed with me and we went to the library. I talked Jackson into selecting a book I read long ago, Smokey the Cow Horse. When I read it, it was a big fat book. The book he took out was so much smaller I wondered if it was the same story, but the title and the author were the same so wouldn't it be?? Afterwards we ate lunch at Chateau Cafe, a little restaurant set up in the lobby of the library. I had my usual chicken salad on croissant; Jackson tried a fancy sort of chicken wrap; Jacob had a ham sandwich cut in triangles, with no mustard and no mayonnaise. Those were his orders to the waitress and he even showed her with his hands how to cut it four ways.
And the day before that, the boys were with me again, and for this day's lunch we chose a buffet they like to go to when they're in Kenner, and Janine joined us. They love Janine. The food at Golden Corral is adequate and there are many choices of different adequate foods. It's not fine dining, but it's adequate. And three desserts for little boys is more than adequate, but wait. Janine had two desserts. Ginnie had none. What do you think of that?
The title of this offering is "Not much." I know everyone will agree, but I don't want to hear it.

Yeah, I have to get over to Phil's, too. That Fat City burger is awesome. Not at all what I expected.
I am so glad you posted this entry, Mom. I gave the meal at "Phil's Grill" a 10 (out of a possible 10). Not many places offer a veggie burger. I was very impressed with the place. Very professional. I'd never know it wasn't a huge corporation with many managers and CEO's holding meetings to decide on every little thing. It is a one-man vision. So cool. the food is fantastic, the decor is great, the menu, logo, flat-screen tv's, the bar, staff, all very good. I have faith in it's long-running success. Since it will be there for a long time, Aaron, Julia, and Michael will just have to be patient. They all let me know it wasn't fair that I was going without them.
And I just could eat Jacob and Jackson up with a spoon. The love fest at lunch was a big treat. My two desserts were tablespoon portions of banana pudding and cherry crunch. I bought a can of cherries at the grocery last night and some vanilla ice cream to make my own dessert. I also bought cream cheese for an icing and will bake a carrot cake. I passed on that at the dessert buffet that day at the Golden Corral. I didn't have time, nor room in my stomach for it.
Carrot cake? Did someone call my name? I'd love some homemade carrot cake!
Mama, I enjoyed reading about your activities. It sounds as though you had a nice week.
Thank you for the very nice comments. I really appreciate all the support. Some member of the family is either eating or sending someone in, I appreciate it all. I'm working hard to get those menu updates in place. I'm also looking down the road at burgers of the month. Someone suggested Nutria, I started researching that and it sounds pretty interesting!
Thanks again.
No, say it isn't so, Phil. Nutria?!!! Cajuns all over would be proud of you.
I need a new Huggie with the Phil's Grill logo on it. I gave mine to a couple of friends that dropped by yesterday - so they'd have the name and location firmly implanted in their minds, as well as a reference. That was a good idea to make those up. Do you have any left?
I should get started on that carrot cake. C'mon, Katie. I'll make a pot of coffee too.
