Superior Beauty

We’ve been spending weekends up on Lake Superior and loving it. Ashley and Nicole have been able to join us and that has been an added bonus as we thought they’d be too busy with friends this summer. In the second picture, you’ll see Ashley standing next to a big white thing….that’s frozen snow/ice in the crevasse of the rocks. This picture was taken June 16th! The water temps that weekend were in the high 50’s. Ashley and Dan did dunk in for a quick cool down as the air temp was pretty warm. The other pictures are from this past weekend and it was really warm and water temps were in the low 60’s. I didn’t venture into the water, but the rest of the crazy people did. They keep telling me how refreshing it is and I’m still not believing them. We found a new area of one of the islands that we like to go to to investigate. There are little waterfalls (trickles of water in some places) and cool rock formations, islands and “sea caves”. All in all, amazing beauty. Every time we go there we see something new. It’s so peaceful there. We’re headin’ up there again over the week of the 4th. The girls are coming and bringing friends so it’s sure to be a fun time.

Great pics, Carol. My favorite is the second-to-last one. Such beautiful blue water off in the distance.

How DO you watch out for the rocks underwater? Where is this shoreline? I've seen the lake from the Duluth side and although I haven't seen much at all, I don't think there are rocks like these there. The Wisconsin side? It's very beautiful, but the caves would give me the creeps. I would not like those at all. How deep is the water in the cave? The pictures are wonderful. Thanks.

Great pictures Carol. Are you all in kayaks or are some of the pictures taken from the big boat? I've never seen water like that in Minnesota!

We were in the dinghy when I took these pictures. The water in Lake Superior can change color depending on where you are. Some areas it's almost black 'cause it's so deep. Other area's it's the color you see in the photos. We don't take the big boat into the shallow water because of the changing depths. There are areas that are like the north shore of MN, high cliffs etc, but as you can see it changes to sand beach as well. I think that's one of the lakes' allures is that it's so different all over. The sea caves aren't creepy 'cause you can see out, although there are some you'd need a flashlight to go into. Nicole isn't too fond of that type and prefers to be in her kayak when investigating them....more control. Aunt Ginnie, next time you come to MN, maybe you should allow time to come up on the boat to go see some of this beauty :o)! Oh, and the area we are in is in Wisconsin waters. We dock at a marina in Bayfield, WI.

Thank you for the lovely invitation. I might hold you to it one day!

Carol, these are beautiful pictures. How nice to be able to go there on the weekends. How far is it from your house? Do you stay on the boat when you go?

Christina, It's about 4 hours from our house and yes, we stay on the boat. We love anchoring out the most 'cause it's so peaceful.
