Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon

I think it could probably clear the oak tree but I think it needs more of a running start to jump over the moon. For the sake of this image, I kinda wish how now brown cow was a Holstein. Probably would have turned out better.

Below is one of the many sweet little female Ruby-throated hummingbirds that visit our feeders regularly. Can you see her beautiful wings?

Blame my wife, Patsy, for that name. Buffy is a buff-bellied hummingbird that has been hanging around CrabAppleLane since late October. He/she has endured snow and freezing temps. Normally, I'm done with hummingbirds, almost all ruby-throats, in early October. This development has been a pleasant and very welcome surprise. Buffy is quite the charmer. Just chatters up a storm. More pictures of Buffy below the jump.

Duncan and Casey

Duncan and Casey - October 1994
Duncan is the Shetland Sheepdog (Or Sheltie, if you prefer) in this picture. He is a fairly spry 12½ year old pup who thinks he's in charge. He has his younger (10½) and much larger brother, Nikki, in line. He also insists on asserting his authority over Casey, the kitten. Casey is about a year old here and is a blur to our two dogs. They are no match for her. She can can do anything they can do, only much faster. She can also jump to the moon and is totally insane. She lives to torment them. She torments Nikki by ignoring him and Duncan by laying traps like the one above for him. She'd swat him and he'd reprimand her with a couple of barks and a snarl. I think she just loved the reaction. Duncan has moved on but Casey (15 now) is still with us and has a younger feline brother who lives to torment her.

Saw the little opossum below come take a drink from the pond yesterday morning. Don't see them as much lately as we did when we first moved in. We never had them in large numbers but it was not unusual to see 3 or 4 per week. This is the first one I've seen here in a few years.

He/she was a little slow getting around and couldn't outrun me if it came to that. Decided to stay still so I wouldn't notice. A better poser doesn't exist.

I believe it to be a bobcat. He's hiding behind the Texas Star Hibiscus in the pond. On the other side is where our bird/squirrel feeders are. Best shot I could get from inside.

I didn't like this one as much but it shows his tail.

Flick Clayton

We just picked up the newest addition to the Clayton family today in Alabama. She is a 10 week old Great Dane puppy and we have named her Flick (named after one of our favorite characters from a book we read called Jackdaws by Ken Follett) It was a two hour trip to the Alabama state line, which was half way for us and the breeders. We were hoping to get a female & had a choice between three black puppies with white on their chests and one fawn (tan). On the ride home she slept the entire way & did not make a sound. Before making it home, we stopped by Nonnie & Grandpa's place in Decatur & they loved her. We also had to swing by Wal-Mart to get some goodies...$65 worth!

When we got home we showed her off to the neighbors, David came over to check her out, and Kellie tried taking her for a walk on the leash...I had to go to a store meeting at Circuit City from 8-10:00 (it's my summer job & it has become more demanding than expected). Anyway, here are some pictures. Enjoy.

The robins are here

The robins are here

They arrived last Sunday here in Bush from points north. A welcome sight. We'll take care of them for a while.

Dogs

Does anyone have a good remedy, preferably an excellent and sure-fire, no fail, remedy, for dogs who turn themselves inside out to chew a spot in an unreachable area? It's not a flea problem. I feel so sorry for my little dog who goes to work on an area and ends up with a sore. And then the sore catches fire and she can't leave it alone. It's just a constant. Years ago, I used a Vaseline and Flower of Sulfur mixture on my German Shepherd and it worked, but it stained everything. I have carpeting now and new furniture and a NEW FLOOR as you may recall and I just don't want a yellow wash over everything. So come on. Tell.

There is supposed to be a good made-for-TV movie tonight on American Movie Channel (AMC) with Robert Duvall at 7 p.m. For those of you who watched and loved Lonesome Dove, you might want to tune in. I didn't like Lonesome Dove but I do plan to watch this one. The trailers look good and the second lead is the fellow from Sideways (can't remember his name).

So there you are. Two things to consider on this Sunday morning.

Still Here

Fanned OutGuess who's still here?

I think he's challenging me to a duel. His mate is behind me somewhere and he's a bit flustered. Very peculiar birds.

I hadn't seen a robin since last year. Until a few minutes ago. Katrina must have wreaked havoc with their benchmarks and normal stops.

Turkey Saga

The turkey saga continues at CrabAppleLane:

Turkeys at the back door

This sight greeted me as I went for my second cup of coffee this morning.

On the deck

Grill.........Turkeys............Grill............Turkeys. There’s a connection there but its just beyond my grasp. The male is puffing up to challenge me but he runs in the other direction if I move toward him. The female looks headless here. She’s looking right at me.

Smart

Have I mentioned that these birds are monumentally dumb? I said that the female was particularly dumb and annoying the other day. Her mate has been working extra hard at his dumbness and I think he has surpassed her, now. He’s trying to squeeze through the bars to get away from me rather than fly over the railing like his mate did. Patsy has named them Trisch and Troy but I think Dumb and Dumber might be more appropriate.

Pack of dogs savage crocodile in Florida

Sometimes nature is cruel but there is also a beauty in that cruelty.

The crocodile, as one of the ultimate predators, can fall victim to the kind of implemented 'team work' strategy, which is possible due to the pack mentality and social structure of canines.

- but not if you're squeamish!

Wild Turkeys

So Patsy runs to our side door and says “There’s a big bird chasing Priscilla. What is it? A buzzard or something?”. I look out at the driveway and I see two big birds but they don’t look like buzzards. I got to the end of my garage and peeked around the corner. They were still there. I ran inside to get my camera but they were gone. Bummer. Missed the moment. Then Patsy says they’re coming up the stepping stones. I guess they thought they were invited over for supper.

Turkey

This guy was heading up the stepping stones toward our kitchen when I came out with the camera. He was cautious but had no fear.

Turkeys

He wasn’t alone. His friend was a bit more shy. Patsy threw some cracked corn to them and they’re still out there dining. Their willingness to eat the food thrown at them leads me to believe they’re not all that wild but I know almost nothing about wild turkeys.

Silly birds

Update (8:56PM): They're still here. They've decided to roost on our garage roof for the night.
