Lunch in the French Quarter

Central Grocery

The Central Grocery is a New Orleans institution. Those muffulettas are quite amazing. It’s all Italian meats and cheeses sliced paper thin with olive salad on a big sesame seed bun.

Lunch today at Muriel’s

Mom, Katie, Patsy, and I ate at Muriel’s today. Katie asked the hostess to give us a tour of the premises. Make sure you do that if you ever eat here. It has very unique rooms, including a seance room, a slave storage area, and a room with a table set for the house ghosts. The balcony overlooks Jackson Square. Unfortunately, it was entirely too hot to eat outside.

Katie and Miss Lena

Katie and Mom had Tarot card readings from Miss Lena. Should have gotten one of them to get us the winning Powerball ticket.

Colonel Jackson and the St Louis Cathedral

Took this as we made our way back to the car. Seen on just about every New Orleans postcard.

One or two more here.

What others are saying

What did y'all eat at Muriel's? Was Katie's friend there? Katie, what did the sooth-sayer tell you? How much did that cost you? See you tomorrow. Tell me then.

We all had something different. I had the Chef Erik's Creation of the Day, which was a fried catfish with some kind of sauce with mirliton slaw. Patsy had the Pecan Crusted Baby Drum, Mom had the Chicken Roulade, and I forgot what Katie had. Patsy and I shared some Oysters Muriel and Katie had Eggplant Crepes for appetizers. We all had a different dessert. It was fun. The food was great but the real treat was the tour.

Katie had a vegetarian po-boy. I thought the food was superb and recommend the place highly. The lunch prices were very low I thought: my chicken roulade (delicious) was $9.50. More than Wendy's or McDonald's, of course, but less than most tablecloth restaurants. I don't know what the evening menu is, but I would guess it's probably twice as much. Lunch is the way to go --probably true of any good restaurant.

Yes, yes, I recommend it highly, too.
