Via Mom: Like model trains? You could probably observe this thing for weeks. More at its website. Since no one can really take it all in, every minute detail has to be perfect. Visitors are going to stop wherever there's an opening on the railing. Looks like an expensive production requiring constant maintenance. No idea how something like that pays for itself at the relatively nominal prices they charge.

CrabAppleLane Hummingbird Flock - September 24, 2010
Decided to set up the camera, use what I learned a few days ago, and try to capture their activity in the morning. Didn't think I had enough light but it turned out OK. You can hear the news in the background mentioning this week's Saints-Falcons game. This is what we get to watch just outside our living room window. It is one of our greatest joys. For what it's worth, there is another feeder out. It gets hardly any visitors. Not sure what the deal is with this location but it gets, by far, the most activity. They are swarming now because they're about to head south for the winter. Not sure if these are all regular visitors or if some of them are heading south from northern climes. They're all welcome. Enjoy.

CrabAppleLane Power Line - September 1, 2008 8:40AM
As I was preparing for Hurricane Gustav about a year and a half ago, I had lamented that I hadn't taken care of a pine branch that was extended out over our power line. The branch had survived Hurricane Katrina somehow but it had grown outward considerably since then. I said I would get to it if it survived Gustav. It did survive. I never got to it. My plan was to have a professional come out and do it. It's 12 to 15 feet up and it's right above the power line as you can see. I didn't get a price but I'm guessing it would have been a couple of hundred bucks. Well, money has gotten tighter since then and I had no choice but to live with it a while longer or try to do it, myself. It should be noted that getting up high on a ladder with a chainsaw near a power line was never going to get very high up off of the bottom of my to do list.

CrabAppleLane Pines - January 27, 2010
A new plan came to us by shear luck. Some parish contractors were clearing tree branches from the utility poles not long ago and one of the men came up to our door and knocked. Patsy answered. They told her they could remove it for us if we wanted them to ... for free. Sold. They did it today.
If you missed it last night like me, Jay Leno's 9@9 with Drew Brees below.

Something came up today and I was instantly reminded of a scene from Northern Exposure. Through the glory of YouTube, here it is:
What a great show that was.
Katie and I will be there.
I mentioned a cool use of FlickR the other day here. I forgot all about it this weekend but had the day off today to tinker around so I broke out the tripod, set the camera on it with the widest aperture and the slowest shutter speed, went outside and snapped three pictures. I uploaded to FlickR as per instructions and then went about my business.

Sign of spring - February 24, 2008
Here are some photos of the fun we've had with the snow this past Christmas. Dan's brother and family were in town from CA. Though they live near the mountains and snow isn't foreign to them, they don't get to play in the snow often. The girls had a bunch of friends over for a sliding party and had a blast. It was fun to watch Kyoko as she experienced her first snowmobile ride and first time sliding. The one picture of Nicole and her cousin Amber absolutely cracked me up! They came in to get scarves ‘cause they were cold and when they came in, Nicole's glasses fogged up. It looks like some kind of joke glasses. Ashley was home from college for 3 weeks and it was nice to have her around. Now its back to school for everyone. Nicole and Kyoko went back to school yesterday; Ashley goes back this weekend. Back to the regular routine, (whatever that is). :o)
