Vacation

|

Last day of a much needed vacation. Unfortunately, the batteries have a way to go before they are fully recharged. I’m still exhausted.

By the way, Happy Halloween!

No big plans for Halloween scheduled today. We’re running some errands this morning as soon as we can get our butts in gear. My sister is having a get-together later this afternoon that we’ll go to. That's about it. Our lives are so happening.

Blog of the day here.

Quote from said blog: “Pat Reusse has a massive case of schadenfreude when it comes to the Packers. Sort of expected in a Minnesota sportswriter, but with him it seems much more evident and nasty. This morning he tried to perpetuate his theory that Packers fans didn't support their team during the 80s, they just went to the games to drink."

Tarantino

| | Comments (1)

Went with some family to see Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill last night. My approach was to be totally open to whatever it was going to be. If you’re expecting Pulp Fiction, I think you’ll be disappointed. It’s mainly an homage to certain kinds of films. Martial arts films and anime are the main two. It is shear style with little substance and just enough dialogue to get to the next action scene. It’s a blast. It was probably a good decision to make it a two-parter. I couldn’t have gone much longer without an intermission.

Uma Thurman was great but Chiaki Kuriyama as Lucy Liu’s personal bodyguard, Go Go Yubari, stole every scene she was in. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. I suspect Part 2 won’t be quite as physical as this one.

Viewing

| | Comments (2)

We had a lovely viewing for Dad last night. There was a surprisingly large number of people there and that was quite wonderful. Not so wonderful was that I didn’t get to see all of them and I wish I would have had more time with some.

Preliminary autopsy findings point to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. We were instructed not to touch the body or the casket during the viewing. I suppose that’s because brain tissue had been removed and there was a possibility of residue. This is an easy disease to hate.

Short Tuesday

|

The sleaze will seep into these endeavors no matter how hard they try to keep it out. I love this line: "There's no lap dancing here," manager Bragley says. "The girls can make a lot of money without resorting to anything."

Ragpickers and Erasers had decent weeks even in defeat. Ragpickers look to be the stronger of these two 4-4 teams.

I have a short work day today and then the I have the rest of the week off. It is much needed.

Free markets

| | Comments (1)

William Safire is extolling the virtues of the free market and lamenting the lack thereof in the prescription drug market today here (Requires registration). He makes some points but I am just not sold on unrestrained free markets in health care. Unrestrained free markets are governed by supply and demand. On the supply side, you have physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical companies, and many other health care professionals. On the demand side, you have people who are in pain or dying. I simply think one side of the equation has too much of an advantage. That’s not to say anything tried so far is working.

Short work week. Originally planned (Very loosely) as vacation time, I’m working today and some of tomorrow to pay back the unscheduled time I took off earlier this month. Hope to take in Kill Bill Thursday while my sisters are in town. I've been dying to see it since I heard about it but the wife won’t go see it with me.

Dad's Obituary posted here. It's from this morning's Times-Picayune. You may need to enter your zip code and date of birth.

Dad and Football

| | Comments (6) | TrackBacks (1)

My dad was a football fan. I’m not sure where he got it from. His dad only had a passing interest in football. Maybe it was his days as a football manager at Warren Easton High School. Dad passed his passion for football on to me. Louisiana is the “Sportsman’s Paradise”. While other fathers were taking their sons hunting and fishing, Dad and I went to or watched football games.

I essentially grew up at Tulane Stadium. Dad and I were there when John Gilliam ran the opening kickoff back for a TD in the first ever Saints game. We were also on the South End Zone exit ramp when Tom Dempsey kicked his 63yd field goal through the North End Zone goal posts to beat the Detroit Lions.

Dad passed away this morning at about 6:30AM.

Small thoughts

|

The “Crispin sleeping in front of the wood pellet stove” photo has gotten some attention here and here. Thanks, LeeAnn.

The winter garden is starting to look very good. I haven’t done one in a few years and had forgotten how much easier they are than my spring tomato gardens.

This Microsoft “critical update” virus is the most resilient virus/worm I have ever encountered. I am still receiving it several times per day both at home and at work.

Spent Wednesday night with Dad. I managed to sleep here and there maybe 5 or 10 minutes at a time. When I got home at 10:30AM Thursday morning, I did some computer work, then yard work, then went out to eat with the wife, and got to sleep at the usual time last night. Staying up all night with him just does not lend itself to a nap the next day. Dad is resting comfortably now and the waiting continues......

Dad took a turn for the worse last night and no one knows what today will bring. That today is Mom and Dad’s wedding anniversary is not lost on anyone. The happiness of this day must prevail.

Good week for football

|

As an admitted intermediate computer user, there is one thing I noticed almost immediately when I started working and/or tinkering with PC’s as opposed to mainframes back in the late 80's. An intermediate user can sometimes get himself out of the trouble he got himself into. The thing I noticed is that the software on PC’s is sometimes quirky and/or buggy and what I do or did may not be the problem. This discovery lends zero comfort. Yesterday, I was having trouble saving entries into just one of the blogs here. The others worked fine. This troublesome one kept hanging at home and at work. I couldn’t figure out why but I did nothing to resolve it other than post a message in a support forum because I really didn't know what to do. I tried again last night when I got home and it worked perfectly. I hadn’t done a thing to it. I beat my brains out yesterday trying to figure out a problem that went away magically all on its own. Yeah, I need that.

Good week all around in football for me. Saints, Ragpickers, and Erasers all won fairly easily. All have tough upcoming opponents.

Saints-Falcons

|

The Indiana Jones Trilogy will be released on DVD tomorrow. My order will be placed by then.

Hoping to spend the night with Dad tonight or Wednesday night. Depends on how or if I can adjust my work schedule. After 2-1/2 weeks in the hospital running every kind of test, we still don’t know what’s wrong with him and are now having to think of health care away from the hospital.

The Saints managed to beat another lousy team yesterday. The Falcons are not a very good team on offense without Mike Vick and they’re not very good on defense if the offense doesn’t help them out. My fantasy teams had very good days yesterday. More on that tomorrow.

Sunday doldrums

| | Comments (1)

Patsy and I visited Dad in the hospital last night. There’s been no improvement since I last saw him Thursday morning. A couple of new diagnoses have been suggested, both plausible. More on those here and here. We’ve heard too many now to lock on to anything. A family member is with him at all times. It seems to calm him.

Magnificent day here in Bush. Sunshine and cool with a nice breeze. We typically get about two days per year like this. Just perfect.

Saints have a tough one today in Atlanta. The records really don’t mean anything. The Falcons have always been able to use a bit of black magic against the Saints.

Patsy made stuffed mirlitons yesterday with her very own fresh-picked mirlitons. It came out quite good but there will be improvements in the next batch. More on that here.

Installed MT-Blacklist yesterday. It was a snap. Highly recommended if you use Movable Type.

Saturday chores

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (1)

Here and here are shows I’d like to see if they come to a venue fairly near to me. Tickets to the former figure to be reasonably-priced. Doubt that's the case for the latter.

Patsy sent me this cool site.

Beautiful, cool day here in Bush. Got the wood pellet stove going this morning. It's not really that cool but Casey and Crispin, our cats, love the stove and I need to let the pellets run out before I clean it up for winter use. That's one of my chores for today. Below is Crispin in his favorite winter spot.

101803a.jpg

The other chore I have is to go to the store for Patsy. Her plan is to make stuffed mirlitons and bring them to the hospital tonight for the family but only if they turn out well. We'll see how that goes.

Best Laid Plans

Still haven’t attended the Franklinton Fair, which is the reason I took off yesterday and today. Absolutely everything I have done since I got off of work Wednesday has taken longer than expected and has not gone the way I want. However, the Red Sox saved me some time last night. I have no need to watch the World Series now. Baseball sucks.

Cubs, Red Sox, Dad

|

Skipping the fair and Charlie Daniels Band tonight to watch the Yankees and Red Sox, Game 7. Go Red Sox!

I feel for Cubs fans. Tip of the cap to the Marlins.

Late entry due to a night spent with Dad. No improvement on his part but still some hope left on mine.

Baseball fans

|

The Cubs and Red Sox are killing their fans. In the Cubs case, the fans are killing them back. If it’s the Yankees and Marlins in the World Series, I doubt I’ll watch a single pitch. I have no interest in that. Also, to the fan who interfered with the play in the eighth inning last night in Chicago, probably not a good idea to go to the game tonight, especially if you have tickets in the same seats. From ESPN: “We hope he slipped out of Wrigley Field unrecognized and went off into the night in safety. We hope he can live the rest of his life without being known as The Fan Who Cost The Cubs The Pennant.” So what does ESPN do? They put his picture on their website, put up a video of the play that people can download, and show it on their programs over and over. In the years to come, it will be shown again and again on just about every sports media outlet. That guy, who probably feels horrible already, now has to concern himself with his safety.

I think the media could do a better job with this. There is no doubt in my mind that he would not have interfered if he thought for a moment that the ball was in play. He did what just about any fan would have done. It’s not like he jumped over five other fans to get to the ball. He reached for a ball that was going to land near him. That said, the Cubs can get him off of the hook by winning tonight and then going on to win the World Series. Because Kerry Wood has to be used tonight instead of the first game of the series, just winning tonight won’t get that poor guy off of the hook with all fans.

This is the last work day of the week for me. I have the next four days off. The loosely thought-out plans I originally had for this holiday are no longer at work. Dad’s ongoing crisis and some other things I won’t bore readers with have come up. No matter, I will enjoy the time off.

Typical Tuesday FFL Stuff

The dream is still alive. Go Red Sox! Go Cubs!

Dad’s spinal tap was clear. His primary care physician was less than helpful yesterday. Said they’ve done all the tests they can do and that we need to start looking for long-term care. A psychiatrist was also supposed to see him yesterday, look at his chart, and look at the list of medications he has been taking. I don’t know how that went yet. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the primary care physician and I’m still hopeful that he can come home in a better condition than his current one.

Ragpickers did OK this week. Erasers not so good. Not happy about the Falcons getting plastered last night. They’re up next for the Saints this week in Atlanta. The Saints don’t need an angry opponent.

Almost all of my hummingbirds have gone south for the winter. I have a straggler or two per day now. I keep nectar in the feeders for those and possibly a few passing through on their way south. I had a Rufus hummingbird a few years ago in the spring. He’s a western hummingbird who must have been blown way off course. He was magnificent.

Traffic has eased up a bit on my commute. They’ve re-opened a bridge (Hwy 11) that has relieved a great deal of the pressure from the I-10 twin span. I’m a little relieved by it as well.

This is Spinal Tap

| | Comments (1)

The Saints won a game yesterday. The only good thing I can say about their performance is they didn’t lose the game. Not impressed.

The family is awesome.

A spinal tap was performed on my dad Saturday and has come back clear. There are still a few tests to run but they don’t expect to find anything. They are now fairly convinced it was a drug reaction. He’s been taking a whole bunch of medication. He’s undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. One the family is focusing on is Xanex. He was complaining that it was making him dizzy and Mom said he was confused sometimes. The doctor told him to stop taking it. He did. Two days later, he’s in the hospital. We think it might be withdrawals.

All of those earlier mirliton pictures posted here were a prelude to the picture below. This is the prize. I have fairly large hands and that is a very large mirliton.

My winter garden below. Planted are broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, chives, and carrots. The carrots were seeds and are not doing all that well. A friend had to plant his carrot seeds three times this year before he could get any to germinate. I will not do that. They are not important enough to me to worry about.

Sooner.....

|

He should have done this sooner. He’ll probably survive but his stature has been diminished dramatically. He’ll lose some of his supporters and the ones that remain will be less vocal whilst his detractors will successfully hang this albatross around his neck and forever deride him about it. Pardon my indifference to him and his self-inflicted plight. I could not care less.

No change in Dad for several days now. A spinal tap was scheduled for Thursday, postponed until Friday, and now postponed until the radiologist consults with the neurologist, who is out for the weekend and can’t be reached. There is some frustration amongst the family about this. Dad’s putting up a pretty fierce fight but it is wearing him down. He can’t stay there forever in his current condition. I’ll check in on him today after work.

Great game last night. Fell asleep just before they went into extra innings. Go Cubs! Go Red Sox!

Baseball, etc......

If this keeps up, I may have to take baseball back. The thought of a possible Cubs/Bosox World Series is enough to get me interested. If that comes to pass, I’ll be interested and I’ll cheer on the Red Sox but will be happy with either winning it. I would expect it to be a great series full of emotion. There would be tears of happiness and sadness. And then some idiot will say something about stadium issues, contract negotiations, labor relations, or whatever and just ruin it. My guess is it will be Bud Selig.

Back to the grind today. Just as well, I didn’t get anything done yesterday save for planting a few broccoli plants.

Spent the night in the hospital with Dad last night. He’s having a tough time. Tried to read more of a book that I had quit a few months ago while I was there. It’s a chapter to chapter book. Read a chapter, take a break, repeat. More on Dad here. Patsy’s there now with Mom.

A busy Sunday

|

The Saints lost yesterday but I am a little more encouraged by this effort than previous ones. I think they’re going to rebound. Going into the season, the defense was suspect. Too many new faces. Making matters worse, they have sustained a lot of injuries. That said, the defense is not really the problem or the reason for the 1-4 record. I don’t think they beat the Colts last week even if the offense performed up to expected levels. Three of the losses can be directly attributed to the offense and the special teams, which was supposedly the strength of this team. Yesterday, one special teams breakdown cost them the game. It’s strictly a matter of confidence now. On the fantasy front, it looks like my Erasers are going to win but my Ragpickers have to sweat out tonight’s game.

Visited Dad in the hospital yesterday. My mom and sister both said he was looking better. He was quite alert while I was there and that offers some encouragement. It has been determined that his main problem is viral in nature. He is constantly agitated and cannot sleep for any length of time. They are testing for many things. I hope they find something soon. Compounding things is an arthritic hip that is sore and some really ugly bruises he sustained from falling down.

Internet connection is acting up again.

My sister, Katie, offers a sweet ode to our dad here.

Movies

|

Watched two movies yesterday. Both served no other purpose but to pass the time. First was The Tuxedo. Jackie Chan is as likeable as anyone in the movies and is dependable mainly because he’s playing the same character in every film. It was predictable fluff but that was fine with me at the time. I forgive plot silliness in a film like this. As William Hurt said in The Big Chill, “Sometimes you have to let art flow over you”. Later last night, we watched Trapped. This one purported to be more serious. The acting was fine but the plot was beyond stupid. It was the kidnappers that were silly. Spoiler alert: Supposedly, they pulled off four of these kidnappings before flawlessly and for the money. This fifth time, however, it is personal on two levels. 1) The kidnappers held the doctor/father responsible for their child’s death. 2) The main kidnapper planned to keep the child rather than ransom her. Dumb. I do not forgive plot silliness in this kind of movie.

We have a quality runoff here in Louisiana for Governor. Bobby Jindal or Kathleen Blanco will make Louisiana history. “This is a new day for Louisiana,” said Blanco. “You have a Cajun woman against an Asian-American. It speaks that Louisiana is really, really ready for a change.” I could not agree more.

The Saints have a tough one today against the Carolina Panthers and former Saint, Jake Delhomme. The Saints need this one in the worst kind of way. My fantasy teams got some much needed good news when it was reported that Broncos RB Clinton Portis is going to play. He is my star running back and has been sorely missed the last two weeks.

My dad is in the hospital not doing very well today. I’ll visit him for a few hours this afternoon. He has to have someone in the room with him. Thankfully, we have a large family and that aspect is covered. Thanks go mainly to my sisters and brothers-in-law.

A little politics

|

Schadenfreude is having a resurgence this week with the travails of Rush Limbaugh. About his comments on ESPN: He is surely entitled to his opinion. Like the Dixie Chicks: He is also entitled to the lawful repercussions of stating it. He's resigned from ESPN and this one will blow over. The prescription drug allegations won’t. That one is going to haunt him in every way imaginable.

From the Mercury News: "I really don't know the full scope of what I'm dealing with. And when I get all the facts, rest assured that I will discuss this with you and tell you how it is," Limbaugh said on his daily radio show. "But I want to say, `Trust me.""

That is the kind of statement he rightfully derides on his radio show. “What he’s dealing with”? He knows what he did and he knows whether or not it was right or wrong or lawful so what he's really saying is, I've got to find out how much they know. His best course of action is full disclosure. Get it out and get it over with. He knows that.

For what it's worth, I only catch his show if I happen to be in my truck when it's broadcast. I think he’s way over the top but I don’t take him all that seriously. However, some do and they may have been given the means to minimize him. I’ll be very surprised if they let that opportunity get by.

Blog of the day here.

Quote from said blog: “Oh yeah, Limbaugh's Gettin' a Taste I know I should be more high-minded, but I must confess enjoying watching Rush stew in his own juices over being a racist moron, and now, maybe a prescription pain-killer drug addict. Now, if he were just some average schmoe, I wouldn't cackle over the drug allegations. But since he's a moralizing, arrogant, bigoted blowhard, who otherwise advocates that drug addicts essentially be rounded up and exterminated... yeah, I'm smiling."

I'd call this schadenfreude! -Rob

Governor Primary

|

Louisiana is having elections tomorrow so we are being inundated with political ads on TV and on the radio. This governor’s race with 6 major candidates is almost as boring as the last one where Governor Foster essentially ran unopposed. A runoff is a certainty. Hopefully, it won’t be as dull as the primary.

Interestingly, all of the candidates have voiced varying degrees of opposition to helping the Saints. Man, is that ever safe harbor! Their tune will change as Foster’s did when they get in office. Statewide candidates tend to run against New Orleans but they all know how important New Orleans is to the well-being of the state and the Saints are very important to the well-being of New Orleans. The new governor will undoubtedly continue on the path the Foster administration set in motion regarding the Saints. If Governor Foster couldn’t ignore the Saints pitiful pleas for handouts in his lame duck term, this bunch won’t be able to do it either, particularly since a lot of the real decision-making will not take place until the next election. This is a rather fine example of tilting at windmills. It is a Louisiana tradition.

October

Glad October is here. The weather has been very nice the last few days. I have 7 days of vacation time scheduled for this month as well. There are purple and yellow wildflowers all over the NorthShore. The showy rattlebox is my favorite. They’re in bloom now. It’s hard to believe something so pretty can get so ugly after the first frost. I will be sad to see the hummingbirds go, however. I’ll be saying goodbye to them in the next two weeks or so.
