Sammy's Deli

Sammy's Deli on Elysian Fields in New Orleans is now open for business again. It was and is a prominent member of my workplace lunch rotation. Their building is behind the trailer and looks like it took on about 6ft of water judging by the water line I saw. It looks like they'll be in the trailer for a few months. No jambalaya yet, though. They have some of the best jambalaya in New Orleans.

Yummmmmm! Looks fab, wish we had that kind of thing in "Quizno's-on-every-corner Phoenix.
Say Rob, is the Olde Nawlins Cookery open again? They have (had) my favorite crawfish etouffee in N.O.
I like Quizno's fine but they serve nothing like a good New Orleans po-boy. The French Quarter, where the Cookery is located, survived Katrina relatively unscathed. I haven't been down there since the storm but I expect that it's open. It's not as great as it once was. New chef, new ownership, something. My brother-in-law worked there in the mid-80s.
One good thing about where I work now compared to my last job is the number of good lunch places close by. I used to have to drive ten or fifteen miles to get decent food and now I can walk to a half a dozen good places.
I wish we had some exciting lunch spots here. Of course I'm in a small town. I know there are some interesting places in Pittsburgh.
Hey Dave,
I'm you in reverse. I used to work in a section of New Orleans called Mid-City. There were 20 superb lunch spots within 5 minutes. Where I am now only has a handful and they were scattered before the storm. Most haven't re-opened yet and some probably never will.
Hey Andrea,
That's too bad. A decent lunch when you work long hours is a must. I bring my own at least three days a week but I have to eat somewhere at least once or twice. Sammy's has a limited menu right now but they're supposed to have red beans & rice next week. They have pretty good red beans. That's probably not something people make in Pittsburgh. Also too bad.
