Monday Morning QB - October 23, 2006 Issue
So what was on Kenny Rogers hand in the first inning last night? He says it was dirt. Whatever it was, the Cards maybe should have let him keep it. Better have the lead in the series if/when you face him again, guys. He’s unconscious.
How pitching has changed. Two sentences. Two eras. From the AP via USA Today:
Rogers became only the second pitcher to have three scoreless starts in a single postseason. Christy Mathewson had three complete-game shutouts (27 innings) for the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1905 World Series.
Both of my fantasy football teams are holding on to tenuous leads this morning heading into tonight’s Giants-Cowboys game. Ragpickers have to survive the Giants Eli Manning and Jay Feely while Erasers have an even closer one trying to survive Jeremy Shockey. I’m a big fan of the Dallas D tonight but I won’t watch the game. I’d prefer to just look at the standings when I get up tomorrow morning.
Quote of the Day
I’m no Christy Mathewson, that’s for sure.
Kenny Rogers, Detroit Tigers
Blog of the day here.
Quote from said blog: "Ever since I first peeled back the plastic wrap from a cheap store brand cassette and dropped it into the small personal tape recorder I got for Christmas in 5th grade, I’ve been fascinated with the art of the mix."

Okay. What does "unconscious" mean -- and did the hand dirt help or hinder? I only follow baseball and the World Series through your blog, so that's why I am questioning this. Nice seeing you yesterday. I thought it was a nice event, didn't you?
Means I don't think a thought is entering his head when he pitches. He's on fire. "En fuego" as some might put it. The dirt didn't hurt or hinder. I don't think the Cards can beat him right now. Yes, it was a very nice day.
I'm still confident about my Tigers in five pick. Rogers is very much en fuego this playoff season and I think, just as in the 2004 WS, we've seen the best of the Cards' offense for this series. Sorry, Rob, but I expect them to go quietly from here on out.
Then again, I could be wrong.
I don't know about that, GWS. With Carpenter, Suppan, and Reyes again coming up, I like the Cards to win one or two of these games at Busch.
Um... Chirsty Mathewson pitched for the A's? I'm pretty sure that he pitched for the New York Giants.
True fact - EVERY game of the 1905 series ended in a shutout.
Um... Chirsty Mathewson pitched for the NY Giants, not the A's. Also, EVERY game of the 1905 series ended in a shutout. What's more amazing is that he managed three starts in such a short span - a week, as I recall.
He surely did pitch for the Giants, Nightfly. He pitched against the A's that year according to Baseball Almanac. USA Today had it wrong. Thanks.
