Spider-Man 3

| | Comments (6)

I'm hoping to see Spider-Man 3 this weekend. I'm very pleased that Sam Raimi is directing this one, too. He understands Spider-Man and did a noticeably better job with the second one than he did with the first. I'm hoping that trend will continue. I never got into comic books or super heroes that much but I did read the Spider-Man comic strip in the old New Orleans States-Item as a kid and also watched the Saturday morning Spider-Man cartoon. He wasn't the typical one-dimensional super hero but I don't think that's why he appealed to me. Basically, I just loved the way he moved from place to place. Shooting those long spider web strands to the tops of the skyscrapers and then swinging on them, well, what could be cooler than that? There is another development I'm pleased with. As usual, I was dead wrong (In the comments) about the Spider-Man franchise being retired for a while after the latest one. Tobey Maguire has signed on for a fourth. One other thing: For the life of me, I don't remember "Spider-Man" being hyphenated back in the late 60s, early 70s when I became a fan. Was it always?

This morning's paper said, "After three trips to the trough, the thrill is gone." The reviewer gave it 2-1/2 stars. However, people, including Toby and Kirsten, on television talk shows say it's the best ever. Would they lie?

Don't care what reviewers have to say about this one. It's review-proof.

Rob, I was big comic collector in the '70s and Spidey was a favorite, so I'll be seeing it soon. From everything I've been reading, it seems like they are trying to cram a lot of stuff into one movie. In the history of the comic book, there are so many great villains, supporting characters and storylines. As a fan of the comics, I am looking forward to seeing how all of these things will be portrayed. So I guess this movie is review-proof for me too. And yeah I think he's always had a hyphen.

The villain I remember in both the cartoon and the daily strip was Doc Ock so these are new villains to me. Looking forward to it. Wasn't wild about The Green Goblin but that probably had more to do with Willem Dafoe's less-than-stellar performance and the technical shortcomings of that first film.

The villain basically makes or breaks these movies. The Green Goblin was an obvious choice for the first movie. There's a lot of history there with Norman Osbourne and his son being Peter's roommate and all. And I thought Willem Dafoe was OK. But, I thought Doc Ock was done better too and he was also a good choice, IMHO. This movie's villain selections have me puzzled. We'll see...

I don't think it was hyphenated either. I only enjoyed the first one and then only for one viewing. Heck I haven't even had the chance to see Pirates 2.
