Just stuff for a CrabAppleLane Sunday - September 2, 2007
This is a temporary url. CrabAppleLane Blog will be at http://www.crabapplelane.net/roblog as soon as I can make the transition.
The week from hell is almost over but we're making slow progress. To recap: Lightning struck CrabAppleLane or very close by Monday afternoon. It did a lot of damage.
- The neutral wire coming to the house from the power company's utility pole was fried.
- Phones and DSL were knocked out.
- Our water well was destroyed.
- Our satellite TV was messed up.
- A nice little stereo boom box we were using in the garage that I bought several years ago on sale was fried.
The yard is a mess. They dug up a ton of dirt here for the well-drilling process. It is almost all red clay, which is the messiest, slipperiest, and hardest-to-remove stuff you can imagine. The well people, the phone people, and the satellite people were all here yesterday. The satellite people were in and out the most. There was nothing to be done but let them do their job but we'll be cleaning that up for a while.
Patsy just turned on the washing machine for the first time since Monday. It works. Hallelujah. Think we may be closing in on the end of the tunnel for this ordeal.
On to other stuff ...
Speaking of the Saints-Colts game Thursday night, does anyone NOT think that game is going to be a blast?
I offer two from the CrabAppleLane backyard on this hot and overcast Sunday. You’re not seeing double. Charlotte has a new friend/neighbor. Chloe is about two feet away. She’s smaller but a much more accomplished webmaster.

4 days until football season ...
Quote of the Day
I'm tired of the phrase "train wreck," we need to start mixing it up.

What a mess. Good luck with it all. It's good that there are spiders and football. :)
I have several spiders on my front porch. Three little spiders with a black and white shell. There's one big spider (about an inch wide) who builds a very nice web in the evening, then by morning, the spider and the web are completely gone. I noticed it twice last week. Strange behavior.
Hey, Rob: Yes, what a mess, and good luck. Pretty extraordinary that on top of all the somewhat predictable electric/electronics trouble that your well got destroyed, too. Hang in there.
This is for Kim. My daughter lives in Atlanta and she has spiders like that. She was told they are "suitcase" spiders because they spin their webs at night and then gather them up during the day. I had the impression that there are many different kinds of spiders who do this and as a group their name is "suitcase." We may have them here in Louisiana too, but I've never seen them or heard of them. Robbie might know.
Yes, Kim. It's been a mess. It seems a lot of misfortune happens right at the start of football season here. A few years ago, CrabAppleLane's current driveway skirt was installed on opening week, cutting our phone line and internet service in the process. Internet is a must for a fantasy football commissioner. Two years ago, well, Katrina.
Thanks, Dan. I've been trying to keep track of your spectacular world tour. As for lightning hitting the well, it is thought that tree roots carried the charge to the well pipe and cracked it.
About spiders and webs: My very limited research and observations of them (Due mainly to these Argiope spiders) is that most spiders weave their webs at night, catch their goodies, and eat the goodies and the web by morning. They particularly like our doorways because I seem to walk through them every morning. I don't think these Argiope's do this, though. Their webs are up during the day.
If you don't mind my asking... how much of all this work will be covered by your homeowner's insurance? This is the kind of thing I always dread. Where something happens and you have to spend all this time and money just getting things back to the way they were before. When it's all done, it'll just be the same.
Aside: I think spiders are so cool. We have these daring jumping spiders and enormous wolf spiders around the house. I once thought about getting a tarantula as a pet but then found out I also needed 500 crickets as food. I wanted 1 insect not 501.
K-
We haven't talked to the insurance company in a few days, Kem, but we think they're going to cover all of it except the new water pump shed that we'll need because the new tank is so much larger than the old tank. We'll be responsible for the shed and our $1000 deductible.
Never had much of an opinion on spiders until I started watching these. We also have some big green spiders among our many other varieties. I'll need to get a book some day so I know which ones I can approach and which ones I need to avoid.
Wow... I've never heard of suitcase spiders. That's very interesting. I was disappointed the big one was gone the next morning because I was going to take a picture.
