Cool stuff from a long time ago
While Googling Bush & Grantham the other day just seeing what else I could find out about the cemetery I had just been to, I ran across this gem quoted below from the St Tammany Court archives:
Saturday April 24 1869Geo. T. Bush vs John Grantham
This is an action founded on an account for 125 cents. Received the citation with a copy of the say.
When asked whether "copy of the say" was legal language or 1869 language, my attorney brother-in-law explained it this way:
I suspect part of this is 1869 language. When a lawsuit is filed, it is accompanied by a citation and summons from the court advising the defendant of the time delays and location where they must file their response/answer. This formality is still followed. I suspect that "with a copy of the say" is a reference to a copy of the lawsuit/complaint -- what the plaintiff was "saying" was the basis of his claim.
Over $1.25. Is that cool or what?

Quote of the Day
His current anonymity is quite a comedown for Marie Jean Paul Joseph Roche Yves Gilbert du Motier Lafayette, who was widely described as "the greatest man in the world" during a triumphant return 40 years later to the country he had helped create.
