Bubba Ho-tep and a CrabAppleLane Sunday

Over a period of a few days, I finally saw Bubba Ho-tep. The DVR recorded it off of one of the HD channels about a week ago but I just couldn't get through it in one sitting. This movie has cult status. I've been hearing about it and seeing references to it for years. Its star, Bruce Campbell, also has cult status as a B movie star. He does movies like Man With The Screaming Brain and the Evil Dead series (I haven't seen any of them). The movie is set in an East Texas nursing home. An aging Elvis Presley and an aging Jack Kennedy fight an alien mummy. See ... Elvis had swapped places with one of his impersonators years ago and the impersonator died of the drug overdose. Jack Kennedy didn't die in the assassination attempt. He was saved, had his skull filled with sand where brain matter used to be, and he was dyed black. Oh, and in an homage to one of our favorite schoolyard put-downs, the mummy wears cowboy boots. Unfortunately, I can only wallow in absurdity for so long. I'll give Bubba Ho-tep credit for audacity and a few good moments but, honestly, this kind of movie is just a little too much for me. I may be the only person on the planet who didn't think much of it, though. See the BOTD for a different view. Most of the reviews I've seen are like that one.

The Sunday image inspired by my blogger friend/neighbor, Lana.

Patsy has been placing sunflower seed on our water pump shelter for about a year now. So far, only the birds have been able to get at it. No squirrels and no raccoons. Obviously, the cardinals love black oil sunflower seed. Would have liked better light for this shot, though. Someday, I'll capture a decent shot of them. They are a joy.

Quote of the Day
I think you know what I'm gettin' at Mr. President. We're gonna kill us a mummy.

Oh yay! Great picture! I saw a cardinal on the road yesterday driving home from lunch. I was so excited.

I see females in the back of your picture, too.

My grandmother loved cardinals and always seemed to have at least one pair around her house. They are pretty rare up here though, I know I've never seen that many in one place. Beautiful birds.

Thanks, Kim. Those females are almost as bright as the males are in New Orleans. No idea why they're so much bigger and more colorful here in Bush.

I suppose it has to do with there being so much habitat in this area that they don't feel the need to defend their turf, Dave. They squabble big time in New Orleans and you'd never get a picture like this.

I got a kick out of Bubba Ho-Tep when I saw it a few years back. At least it's not the same-old Hollywood claptrap, y'know?
Thanks for sharing your cardinals--they're lovely.

I'm not sure you're really supposed to believe Jack when he says he's JFK in Bubba Ho-Tep, especially since he makes a comment about a woman who says she's his daughter. The point is, he believes he's JFK, just like Elvis believes he's Elvis, and perhaps it doesn't matter if either of them really are who they say they are, as long as it guides their actions.

As for the whole mummy-in-cowboy-boots thing . . . yeah, that was pretty random. The movie revels in absurdity, and I can totally see how that might turn some people off. I'm sure you're not alone there.

Thanks for the link -- I got a good chuckle out of the quote you picked.
