About LSU Football Coaches

Back in September, three guys, including myself, had a discussion about LSU future ex-coach, Les Miles, on the CrabAppleLane Forums. The consensus was that Lloyd Carr would be out at Michigan, that they'd offer that job to Miles, and that he'd take it. It probably marked the first time that the three of us agreed on anything. It should have signaled the apocalypse. Instead, I think it's going to turn out to be right.

I don't think any LSU fan is as concerned about losing Miles as they are about the speculation coverage this is going to create for the next few weeks. The Tigers have three tough games left and they need to win them all to achieve their goal. The Advocate in Baton Rouge has this to say. They'll probably limit their speculation somewhat because there would definitely be a backlash if they overdid it but the Detroit Free Press, with no such self-imposed restrictions, will probably run stories about it almost every day similar to this one. How it will affect the team preparing for a tough Arkansas this week, a tough SEC East Champion next week, and a tough BCS opponent (Championship or not, it will be a BCS opponent) is anyone's guess. As Les Miles so eloquently said, "The timing is just great.".

Speaking of ex-LSU football coaches, Nick Saban mentioned September 11 and Pearl Harbor when talking about his team's embarrassing loss to Louisiana-Monroe. I don't think he was really comparing those events to his events but it wasn't a good idea to mention them. At LSU, I was thoroughly impressed with his handling of the media and his eloquence in talking to fans and alumni. Something happened to that Nick Saban last year while he was with the Miami Dolphins and being romanced by Alabama. When it comes to the media, he's off the rails these days. That's not a positive but I think it's only temporary. He knows that if he wins there, that will just be one of his endearing quirks to their fans and it will be forgiven. He also knows that if he doesn't, it will hasten his demise.

Quote of the Day
"As much as you can feel for a man making $1.8 million a year and bound to make more — somewhere — I feel for Miles. His dream job comes open at the exact moment his current team is poised to play for a national title — any coach’s dream.

He may get both.

He may get neither.

He’s bound to have regrets."

Quote from said blog: "The Big 12: we might not be the best conference in 2007, but I’ll be damned if we’re not the most entertaining."

Saban seems angry & bitter these days. Must be hard to make all that money...
