CrabAppleLane Sunday and the end of football season for the Saints
I suppose a tip of the cap is in order for the New England Patriots. They finished the regular season undefeated and are going to now attempt to finish as Super Bowl Champions. In so doing, they’d join the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only team to do so. Whereas the Miami Dolphins did it with class and humility, the Patriots chose a different route. With the exceptions of Tom Brady and Kevin Faulk, the Patriots are thugs. Most people rooted FOR the Dolphins. Most people are rooting AGAINST the Patriots. Count me in the latter group. It wasn’t always like this. Until this season, I thought their organization was the class of the NFL. Spygate, running up scores, and Belichick’s supreme arrogance changed all of that. They have an Us Against The World mentality. I’m rooting for The World and I think they have a chance. The Pats are not playing the kind of football now that they were playing earlier in the season. They can be beaten.
As for the New Orleans Saints, their season came to an end today. They weren't mathematically eliminated but it would have taken a monumental turn of events to facilitate entry into the playoffs. 1) They had to win today in Chicago (Failure 33-25). 2) The 9pt favorite Redskins would have had to lose at home to the Cowboys, whose starting players aren't going to play much if at all. 3) The 3pt favorite Vikings would have had to lose at Denver today. Denver is awful. I'm glad it's over.
One from the backyard on this dreary CrabAppleLane Sunday.

I love having the chipping sparrows around. Ironically, had the Saints won today, they could have made the playoffs. Ah, well...
The Redskins win this afternoon would have eliminated the Saints even if they had won, Lana. As it turns out, losing allowed them to jump over a few teams in the 2008 draft. It was the best possible outcome.
Chipping sparrows are a summer bird for Maryland. Occasionally someone will see one during a Christmas Bird Count over on the Eastern Shore but that's about it. Even when they're here, I don't get them on my feeders very much.
K-
They're just passing through here, Kem, and they're starving. :)
Same here on the Patriots, Rob. I have less respect for them now than at the beginning of the season, despite the accomplishment of going undefeated. The biggest thing for me was the running up of the score. That got ridiculous at times and I hope Belichick sticks around long enough for karma to catch up with him.
I have no beef with the players from the '72 Dolphins, but I have to say I never liked Don Shula, to put it mildly.
I think that's what bothers me most about Belichick, Dave. I don't think he'll hang around long enough for the payback. I think he'll hang it up when his fabulous core group of players stops getting it done in two or three years.
