Bad day in Minneapolis

Amazing picture of the horrific bridge collapse in Minneapolis yesterday. Absolutely unreal what happened there. Dave's account of it.

35 days until football season ...

Quote of the Day
There were two lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper, at the point of the collapse. Those cars did go into the river.
Minneapolis Police Lt. Amelia Huffman

Blog of the day here.

Quote from said blog: "All 60 kids on the school bus got off the bus. About 10 have gone to the hospital. About 30-40 are still on the scene and need to be picked up by their parents."

What others are saying

Glad I wasn't on that bridge. Yikes!

I was on the road all day and trying to stay up to date on what is going on. Sounds like things are still pretty uncertain at this point as to how many are missing. I heard as many as thirty during the day and now I hear eight. Eight is grim, but much better than thirty.

The numbers could have been much worse had all 8 lanes been open. Only two each lane were open while they worked on the street lights and other stuff.

Luckily, I haven't been on that stretch in probably 20 years when I used to live near Dinkytown (U of M sprawl area for you out of towners).

Dave,

The numbers keep getting revised. Probably won't know the actual total for a few weeks.

Laura,

Great to hear from you. I stayed at the University Days Inn when I was up there last. Not sure how many times I crossed it but it was a few. I know I crossed it that day I met you for the Twins game.

Now, I worry every time I drive or walk over or under a bridge or overpass. I'm sure this will pass but the state of our infrastructure is pretty bad if what public officials are saying is true. Music to the ears of construction companies, I'm sure.
