The $64 million question and other stuff
Calvin Johnson signs a contract worth $64 million. Hasn't played a down in the NFL. From one of his teammates:
"People are excited about Calvin, but they don't even know what they've got yet. He's going to be one of the top receivers in the league in a couple years."
This is kinda backwards if you ask me. I think Calvin Johnson will be a great wide receiver in the NFL but it seems to me he should be the best paid wide receiver when he actually is the best wide receiver.
Expect Jamarcus Russell to now get a contract in line with Peyton Manning's and better than the ones Tom Brady or Drew Brees have. That's ridiculous. Then, there's Brady Quinn. In my mind, it makes sense for rookie quarterbacks to hold out because it costs them nothing and it lowers expectations. If a rookie QB misses three weeks of training camp, no one would expect him to be the opening day starter, to contribute much right away, or to do very well at all the first season. If he does do any of that, it will be considered lagniappe. In effect, a lengthy holdout extends the honeymoon with his coaches, teammates, and fans. Quinn is going to sign a contract in a few weeks that won't be much different than the one that is on the table now and after the starter's job has been safely handed to someone else. Quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this year doesn't promise to be much fun. Personally, I don't think Russell or Quinn are ready for the NFL this season.
