This n that - August 11, 2007

I don't mean to go too Discovery Channel on everyone but I was somewhat fascinated by the goings-on of this group of Argiope spiders. No sign of his rival from last week (Correction: 4:30PM - Her other suitor has made an appearance this afternoon). She had a bigger day planned than I thought. The rival is on the move now. I suppose one might call this "spider p0rn" (Intentionally misspelled). Her web is in the center in both images, her lover's "companion" web is on the far left, and his rival's is on the far right. She spurned his first advance, was somewhat tense in their first actual encounter as shown in the first image, but she was totally relaxed thereafter. If you're not completely creeped out after looking at these, check out Ree's spiders. Living a country life has its joys and one of them is forging a coexistence with spiders.

In unrelated matters, you had to know this was coming.

I also would like to offer an image from last night's dinner run.

Because it made me smile. Good on ya, Taco Bell.

26 days until football season ...

Quote of the Day
We were a little sharper tonight on offense, but you would still like to see us complete those drives with touchdowns.

Blog of the day here.

Quote from said blog: "Now, I've never milked a goat personally, but I don't think he was doing it right. Nope. Definitely not the right way to milk a goat."

No change in the spider saga this morning so I offer two from the backyard on this sunny and surprisingly mild-temperatured CrabAppleLane Sunday. It's so nice here that I might have to break out the grill. Unknown CrabAppleLane wildflower Not sure what... [Read More]

What others are saying

Is that pic you linked to photoshopped? I hate to say it, as absurd as it is, but I think it's entirely possible that it's real and that people would buy it.

Thanks, Dave. If you're talking about any of my images, they weren't touched except to resize. The originals are 3264 X 2448 pixel images. I like the first one a lot. I can't speak for Ree's images.

Wonderful pictures. Did he survive?

He's still alive right now. He was all over her. She had many chances to do him in if that was her intent. She took a break from hanging upside down to wrap up an insect that flew into her web and she moved so quickly that I had to back up a few steps. Those eight long hairy legs move independently and very fast. It's a little frightening when you're within a couple of feet of her.

Go Discovery, Go Discovery!! I just love these photos! BRAVO!

No, I meant the diet water pic. Real or not it's funny.

Thanks, mon@rch. Yours are very good, too. Been going through your FlickR pages.

Forgot about that link, Dave. I think it is real and probably available in Europe at the moment. I've never seen it. That blogger lives in The Netherlands.

Thanks for the link. I don't think I've ever been anybody's "Blog of the Day" before.

I'm soo glad you posted a picture of this spider. I have one living outside my bedroom window. She is absolutely beautiful! I took a bunch of pictures of the one at my house. I love the "head", it looks like a skull! I stood about 2 feet from her when taking the pics. I've never seen one like this before. I was amazed! I didn't know the name of this spider, so I'm glad you posted the pics and the name! I love spiders, and snakes for that matter.
Alicia thinks I'm nuts......

I'm finding they're quite common up here, Donna. I watched one in my garden for a whole summer a few years ago. Her web was about 18ft tall. This one isn't that big but I'm enjoying watching her.
