CrabAppleLane Sunday - August 12, 2007

No change in the spider saga this morning so I offer two from the backyard on this sunny and surprisingly mild-temperatured CrabAppleLane Sunday. It's so nice here that I might have to break out the grill.

Not sure what this is. (Update 10:58AM: Kim correctly identified it as sow thistle). I thought it was some form of dandelion but my wildflower book puts them at 18in tall. This beauty is about 5ft tall. Love the green stems against the white flowers.

This Tiger Swallowtail must have seen my camera. Stopped and posed on the only sunny spot around.

What others are saying

That flower looks like some kind of sow thistle. The butterfly is beautiful. :)

Thanks, Kim. That appears to be what it is. Anuual sow thistle: http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/cropprot/weedguid/sowthist.htm

I'm with Kim, that butterfly is beautiful. It's in much better shape than that raggedy one I was chasing after last week. Nice shot of it too.

Thanks, Susan. I'm thinking this one couldn't have been more than a day or two old. They get faded and raggedy fairly quickly around here, too. Truly, the picture doesn't capture it.

Thanks, Kim, for placing that sow thistle. We have a bunch of it growing outside the backdoor to my office. I always thought it was some sort of unruly dandelion.

Rob, I love your swallowtail. We rarely get anything other than your basic monarch around these parts.

I think the plant in the photo is prickly lettuce.

Thanks, Roger, but I think Kim is right. It's identical to the annual sow thistle I've seen pictures of.
